Welcome to society, your personal slice of hell. It's not what you think it should be, it's twisted, sick, broken. You're urged to be yourself, yet scolded when you try. Mental illnesses are classified as teenagers being dramatic, we're ignored, and most don't receive help. You're pushed down when you try to get up again, often left alone when you're in need. Those of us that are introverts find it difficult to interact, social anxiety and panic attacks, most don't know what to do with us when we get like that.
Welcome to a world where money is king. Everyone is willing to do anything, for the right price of course. Welcome to a world where sex and drugs are put over love, commitment, and intelligence. Welcome to a world where anything other than heterosexuality is met with cruelty. Welcome to a world where a boy can't introduce his boyfriend to his parents for fear of being kicked out, where a girl and her girlfriend can't adopt children because there's no man in the house.
Here, you're going to be judged. Here, you're going to be ridiculed. People are going to tear you apart, and you'll be expected to take it all in stride, and if you eventually snap and bite back, suddenly you're the mean one. Some will build you up, most will tear you down. Some you will trust, most you will be leery of. You're being pulled in both directions, being who you are, and being who you're told to be. There's no happy medium, no sense of direction or sanity to it whatsoever.
You're given a gender when you enter this world, and society expects you to follow that role. The girl has to play the damsel in distress, always needing a man to pull her out of her problems. The body is seen as frail, but the heart is seen as a block of steel. The boy is seen as a brave character, more focused on physical ability than mental stability. Emotions are seen as the substandard, the body is seen as the standard. What about when the role is reversed? When a girl decides she doesn't want to wear the clothes of her gender, refuses the roles, defies the standards. Suddenly she's seen as so many different things. Some call her butch, some call her lesbian, some call her transgendered. What about when a guy dresses femininely, or decides a little foundation isn't a bad thing? Again, he is met with nothing but negativity. Some say he's gay, some say he's girly, some say he's a drag queen. Why can't we just be ourselves?
Welcome to a world where nobody respects females or those who identify as female. You face sexual harassment on a consistent basis, you have to swallow it down and force a smile, pretend that you don't care. Welcome to a world where you can't fight back when you see an injustice, because you know they'll all just silence you. Everyone turns a blind eye to the wrongs they see. Others' suffering is insignificant, as long as you're alright. Abuse is ignored, no saviors in sight. They'll turn and walk away, they ignore your screams and pleas for help.
Society has a mold, and you better fit it or you'll be alone. You're a girl? Are you thin and pretty with tanned, flawless skin and long legs? You're a guy? Are you tall and muscular with dark blue eyes? No? Then you aren't worth it, to them. To them you're no good. They're a backwards bunch, society is, more interested in the wrapping paper than what's underneath it. Flatten your stomach, make your thigh gap bigger, make it so you can count your ribs and see your collar bone, such standards lead to anorexia, bulimia, depression, can't you see you're destroying us?
Welcome to society, hope you like what you see. You're now part of a group, any attempts to be an original, an individual will immediately be silenced. Welcome to society, we're all messed up in the head. Welcome to society, where nobody cares until you're dead.
Enjoy your stay.
