He loves Haruhi, but he loves his brother more. In other words, Kaoru gave up his first love for his brother. He is silently cheering for Hikaru over Tamaki. Kaoru and Hikaru have always been together, but Kaoru knew that someday they would have to part. As the little brother of the twins, he felt like he was the older one. Kaoru knows that his brother is less emotionally mature than he is, but the way that Hikaru looks at Haruhi tells Karou that Hikaru is maturing faster.
"Hey, Karou," said Hikaru. "What color do you think I should dye my hair?" Karou raised an eyebrow at his brother. Dying his hair a different color, that's new.
"Go for the darker one," replied Karou.
"You want to help me," asked Hikaru.
"Of course," said Karou. This is just the beginning of the changes Karou will see in Hikaru. First dying hair a different color, then what? Needless to say after Karou finished helping Hikaru with his hair, change is not so bad.
