The Nightmare of the Corpse Bride
Memories
"...and my new "TURBINE OF TERROR" is sure to be a great hit at this years Halloween celebration!" Dr Finklestein roared triumphantly.
Sally looked at the contraption with a raised eyebrow.
"It's very... interesting, Doctor. What do you think Jack?"
"Oh... yeah... great..." Jack wasn't even looking at the machine.
"Jack?" Sally shook his shoulder. "Jack?"
"Oh right, sorry." Jack said shaking his head. "It's wonderful Doctor. I'm sure everyone will love it." He gave a smile that didn't convince anyone and walked out of the room. Sally sighed and went after him.
Jack stood on the curved hill, looking out at the full moon.
"Jack?" He turned to see Sally behind him. "What's wrong Jack? Every year you just have this period of misery. Why? What's troubling you?" he sighed and looked away.
"It's nothing to be worried about Sally. I just don't like this time of year, that's all." He could tell by the look she was giving him that she wasn't convinced.
"I don't want us to have secrets from each other Jack. I love you. Let me help you."
"It's just... many years ago, before I met you, I lost someone very special on this night."
"Oh Jack, I had no idea." She touched his shoulder comfortingly. "Were they a great friend?"
"Yes, and I just can't get over it. I've suffered alone for so long."
"You're not alone any more Jack." He looked at her. "I'm here. I won't leave you." He smiled and took her hand.
"Thanks Sally. I'm glad I have you." They kissed briefly but sweetly in the moonlight. "You go ahead, I just need to clear my head and then we'll get back to planning this year's Halloween. Ok?"
"Ok." She smiled again and walked back towards Halloween town. Jack sighed again, his heart full of turmoil. He stared at the moon, feeling even more sad than usual.
"How can I explain to Sally that when I was alive I lost my one true love on this very night?" He turned away from the moon and began walking back to the town.
The gentle tapping of a white heel on the concrete slabs echoed in the wood of holidays. A long white gown rustled in the wind. Blue hair flowed in the air. White bones clicked together as they were clasped in a grip of confusion. Beautiful blue eyes stared around at the surrounding area. Puzzlement set into her mind.
"Is this heaven?" Emily asked.
