Secret Santa
Draco swallowed his suddenly dry throat, shifting from one foot to the other, clenching his hands into fists before releasing, failing to find enough courage.
"And you're positive he likes this?"
"I think I would know something as simple as this about my best friend, Malfoy."
He scowled, staring at the box of chocolates.
"But. It's so…small."
"Trust me. These are his favorites."
Draco sighed before relenting, grabbing the tiny box. "You better be right about this, Granger."
She shot him a smug smile. "When have I ever been wrong?"
Any previous tact he had planned for the exchange was thrown out the window when he opened the doors of the Great Hall. Draco marched right up to the trio gathered near the Christmas tree and unceremoniously shoved the impeccably wrapped gift at the surprised Gryffindor.
"Thanks?" Harry said with furrowed eyebrows but accepted the rectangular box nonetheless. As Harry examined the gift curiously, the tall ginger by his side scowled at it distrustfully.
Ron nudged his friend with an elbow, muttering, "Check it for hexes."
Draco scoffed, but before he could say anything, Hermione interrupted with an exasperated sigh.
"The Secret Santa exchange was supposed to come after the Christmas dinner."
"Don't worry, 'Mione, I won't open it," Harry said, lips stretching wide in a teasing grin.
"You better not, mister," she warned with a smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. Hermione tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, latching onto Ron's arm to pull him away.
"Let's help set the table!"
"But, 'Mione, the house elves—," Ron was immediately quelled at her furious look.
The two young men stood there silently, the cheerful laughter and light-hearted chatter filling the hall comfortably.
Harry beckoned Draco to walk with him toward the giant tree.
"Thanks for the gift," Harry said again, smiling up at Draco who stared for a second before hurriedly looking away.
"I should have given you something more."
Harry bent down, placing the present carefully under the tree.
"No, it's perfect. I'm sure I'll like it, unless you really did place hexes on it," Harry joked, earning a small chuckle from Draco.
"Come on," Harry reached out to touch Draco's hand briefly before pulling back, "let's go join the others."
Draco stared in shock at Harry's back. He looked down at his hand, recalling that flash of warmth that went as quickly as it came. A barely perceptible quirk of a smile rested tranquilly on his face as he followed after.
