"Parvati?" Padma spoke into the air, the darkness swallowing her words. It was the night before the Big Day. The day that she and her sister would board the train to Hogwarts and begin a whole new adventure. She and her sister had spent the entire day bantering their mother with even more questions then usual. But Padma's mind was still overflowing. Who would she sit with? Was she allowed to buy candy from the trolley? How big was the castle? What were the four houses, again?

Of course, Padma had done the reading. All summer, she had been reading Hogwarts, a History religiously and checked out many more books from Flourish and Blotts than her sister had. She had enjoyed choosing her wand (or having her wand choose her?) and getting her new robes, but she had a dull weight in her stomach that had been resting there since her letter had arrived. Now, as she lay in her bed, the weight was getting heavier and heavier and twisting her stomach into knots.

"What?" said Parvati irritably, switching on a lamp on their bedside table and resting on her elbow. Padma squinted to see her sister in the bright light.

"What if we're not put together?" Of course Parvati knew that she was talking about the Hogwarts houses. Both twins had been thinking about it ever since they got their letters, but neither had said anything until now. Parvati and Padma both knew how different they were, although no one else seemed to think so. Parvati was the one that they listened to, the talkative one, the outgoing one, the brave one. Padma was always at Parvati's side, and everyone assumed that they were exactly alike. No one asked Padma was she thought, they asked Parvati. But she wasn't complaining, she usually agreed with what Parvati said, she just wondered what would happen if they were separated at Hogwarts.

Parvati got up from her bed and moved over onto Padma's pink one.

"We will be. Isn't there some kind of rule? They can't separate family."

"I don't think so, Parvati," said Padma, moving over to make room for her sister. They both crossed their legs at the same time, unconsciously.

Parvati took both her sister's hands in her own, and linked their pinky fingers together.

"Some silly old hat can't separate us," she promised. Padma nodded and they both climbed back into bed. Parvati switched off the lamp as Padma pulled the soft covers over herself. The weight in her stomach had lessened.

Parvati's right, Padma thought, nothing can pull us apart.

As both sisters drifted off into sleep, they were unaware of the dark silhouette of their mother in the open doorway. Their mother smiled as she closed the door gently. She placed the old muggle camera she had been holding on a nearby table and went off to bed.

Thanks for reading! I hope you liked it, even though it's kind of short. Many thanks to WeasleySeeker, my beta. I may continue up until their sorting, I'm not sure yet. Please don't forget to review! -Singing in the Dead of Night
