It is a hazy memory, or perhaps a dream. She can never really tell, it is all too clear yet obscure all at once. She can see (imagine) long black hair framing a pale face. Soft hands petting her, crimson lips crooning old rhymes and eyes as dark as endless night… before it all fades to black.

She had once tried to pretend, that the woman had short brown hair and kind brown eyes instead. The dream had faded immediately and she is filled with an overwhelming sense of guilt. The loving breakfast laid out for her just makes her heart sink deeper and deeper. She does not deserve this.

Once, she had asked her master if he knew her mother. His lips curved into a frown and although he sat as still as he always did; there was a growing unrest in his eyes that made her grow silent. She could feel it in the wind, a brewing storm. She had never asked again…not if it made her master unhappy. There was no need for a mother, she had her master. She was happy…

She still dreams of that woman but it has gotten even hazier. Those beloved rhymes are no longer in Chinese, the language of her home. They blur into an unfamiliar language which begin to sound familiar, loving. Dark eyes start to lighten and I-pin can see, feel the affection. And the dream fades to white as she opens her eyes to meet warm honey brown ones.

"I-pin, breakfast!" As the originally confusing language begins to sound soothing, I-pin feels a smile spreading.

"Coming, Mama!"

She didn't need a mother, not her. She already had a mama…and that was enough.
