Summary: Sharona/Monk fic. Written before Sharona left the show so…just…pretend she didn't. Please Read and Review! Thanks!
Adrian Monk looked at his assistant- and best friend- Sharona over the rim of his coffee mug and sighed. Last week they had argued. Actually it had been nine days, two hours, thirty-seven minutes, and roughly forty-three seconds…but who was counting? He'd really made her angry this time. He might have questioned her integrity and morals rather…loudly…in public…at Benjy's school. He felt terrible about it now. 'I mean, who really cares if she slept with that last scumbag- guy- she dated?' Monk thought. 'Just because she is so beautiful and deserves better…and is so beautiful…and deserves better…'
Sharona cleared her throat. She was sitting across from him right now, reading the paper. Her face set in a straight line, her eyes moving quickly across the paper. Monk thought back to the tears that had been in those blues eyes, threatening to spill, the hurt look on her face, the embarrassment. It was that moment he realized he was in love with her, that he had been for a long time. And for the first time in his life, Adrian Monk could not pinpoint an exact time. He could not guess the moment he had actually fallen in love with her; he didn't know the time, the date, even the year. But at that moment, he did know that he hated himself for hurting her, and he vowed never to be the cause for those sky eyes clouding over again. He never wanted it to rain for her again.
He had called her later that night, begging her forgiveness, singing her praises, apologizing over and over. She had eventually forgiven him, as she always did. He'd asked if he could take her out to dinner, but she'd said no. He'd asked her everyday since then, several times a day. But she always said, "No, Adrian, but thank you for asking."
But he always asked again later.
He set down his coffee mug, centering it on the coaster, and then centering that on the back up coaster underneath that one. He hadn't asked her yet today. "Sharona," he said, looking up. She peered over the edge of the paper. "Sharona, can I take you out to dinner sometime?"
Sharona lifted the paper up again, so only her eyes were showing over the top. "We'll see," she said. Monk detected a sparkle in her eyes and the hint of a smile in her voice. Her eyes no longer darted back and forth across the paper either; they were fixed in one place, staring happily on some insignificant line of text or picture.
Adrian smiled too. 'We'll see.' It wasn't a 'no'. He lifted his mug again and settled back in his chair. 'We'll see.' It was going to be a good day.
