Though she knew they would eventually be going to Hogwarts, Hermione was adamant that her children go to Muggle primary school first to get used to that sort of environment, and Harry agreed. Ron and Ginny didn't know much about Muggle school, but they didn't want to argue with their significant others. Especially Ron.
The children did well in their classes and when James reached his third year and Rose and Al were in their first, the Weasleys were introduced to a new concept called a 'science fair.' None was more excited for this than Mr. Weasley, who was always the one to cheer loudest at any of his grandchildren's football games and recitals.
James finished setting up his poster board and experiment on the table. Science wasn't his best subject, but his Aunt Hermione helped him with a simple one. Whose mouths are cleaner? Dogs, cats, or humans? It was sure to get him the grade he needed.
"Extraordinary," said Mr. Weasley. "Dear, look! This child has made a volcano out of plaster and chicken wire! Tell me, dear boy, how did you achieve this?"
The young boy pushed up his glasses and explained the process, finding it easier than explaining it to any of his teachers.
"Astounding! Oh, and what do we have here?"
From marshmallow structures to theories of insecticides affecting plant growth, Mr. Weasley was fascinated with each experiment and resolved to purchase some science books from the bookstore when he returned home. Every child he spoke to was left feeling much better about their project.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, we will be awarding the ribbons in a moment."
Ribbons? Oh, what a splendid idea, Mr. Weasley thought.
Keeping his wand hidden, he backtracked through the projects and left a ribbon on each one stating what he thought was most fascinating about it. They probably wouldn't mean as much as those fancy ones in the front, but certainly they were better than nothing. These children worked so hard after all.
"There you are, Dad," said Ginny, when he returned to James' project. "Where have you been?"
"Oh, just enjoying the fair," he said.
"Look, Mummy!" the fourth year with a potato clock said. "This ribbon is rainbow colored!"
"Arthur, you wouldn't have anything to do with that, would you?" Mrs. Weasley asked suspiciously.
Mr. Weasley smiled innocently. "No, idea what you mean."
