I'm not totally happy with how this one turned out. It didn't go quite like I had in mind, and I don't like the way I ended it. Here it is anyway.

Never Gonna Be Alone

It was rather late, far too late for visitors, when Nikola hear a knock at his door. He was, of course, awake; he had never been much for sleeping, and since his introduction to the Source Blood, he no longer needed it.

He glanced at the clock, though he knew full well what time it was, without looking. 12:47 am. Far to late for visitors. Or, perhaps it was too early.

He opened the door and smiled. It was never too early or late for a visit from Helen Magnus.

"Hello, Helen," he said. But Helen wasn't nearly as happy to see him. "What is it?" he asked, his face falling,

"You were right," she said simply, entering his home and closing the door behind her.

"I'm quite often right," he said. "Right about what, Love?"

"John. He's… you were right."

Nikola sighed. "I'm sorry, Helen. I never wanted to be right about that."

"I know," she nodded, understanding.

"Is there anything I can do?" he asked, but already knew the answer. Of course there was nothing.

She shook her head. Then wrapped her arms around him, burying her face in his chest. He wrapped his own arms around her, holding her tightly.

"He's out there," she said. "Maybe slaughtering some harlot..."

"James and Nigel and I," Nikola began. "We will confront him. Make things right."

"Things can never be made right," she told him. "And no, you won't be the ones to speak with him."

"Surely you won't-"

"I must," she interrupted. "It must be me."

"Helen-"

"Please Nikola," she begged. "I will be the one to stop him, kill him if I must."

"As you wish."

"I have one more favor to ask of you," she began, looking up into his eyes.

"Anything."

"I do not wish to be alone tonight. Not with the way things are. I hope it is not too inappropriate to request that I stay with you tonight."

Nikola smiled. "Of course you may stay. You needn't ask." He would never leave her alone.
