Hello. I do not own the Hunger Games or Les Mis. I am new to fanfics, so please be kind, but please give me some constructive criticism if you feel I need it. I am always open to it.
ENJOY!
It was the day of the reaping for the Hunger Games again. I would never get used to it no matter what; all 12 to 18 year olds eligible to fight to the death. I hated it. It's worse the further out you go. I lived in District 12. It was worst for us.
As usual, I went to Marius' house before we went to the reaping. Even since he started to date Cosette he was always the same. She'd be meeting us there too. They'd been going out for a couple of months and it still hadn't gotten any easier.
I knocked on the door, doing my best to hide my nerves. My name was in there 50 times. Marius and Cosette didn't want for anything, somehow. The chances of them being chosen are slim to nil. Marius opened the door with a smile. He was always cheerful for the reaping.
"Hey, 'Ponine." He welcomed me cheerfully.
"Hey." I said as cheerfully as I could. "You look great, as per usual." He was dressed in a black suit that suited him perfectly.
"So do you." He smiled. My outfit was nowhere near as nice as his suit. It was a brown skirt and a white blouse with a belt around the middle. I wore my usual hat that always kept my confidence up. "We're meeting Cosette at her house." He said, stepping out and closing the door behind him.
We walked and chatted for a couple of minutes. I noticed that he seemed distracted and worried. "Cosette will be fine. She's not going to be picked. Trust me. Nothing's going to happen to her." I promised. He smiled at me; I could see he was comforted. There'd be no chance of her being chosen.
We got to Cosette's house and she was out straight away. She, of course, looked stunning and Marius told her so. We walked towards the Justice Hall, Cosette and Marius holding hands. It hurt more than ever, knowing that I'd never be with him and that, chances are, after the reaping, I'd never see him again.
I stood next to Cosette while we waited to find out who would be chosen. We held hands while Effie Trinket made her speech.
"We'll do the gentlemen first, this time, shall we?" She smiled sweetly. She put her hand in the giant ball and pulled out a piece of paper. "Marius Pontmercy."I felt Cosette grip my hand tighter, I was doing the same. How would we cope? What if he didn't win? We looked over to where the boys were cooped up and saw Marius, white as a sheet. He looked right at us with a tear in his eye. He walked up to the stage and stood next to Effie.
"Now for the ladies." Again, she put her hand in another ball and pulled out a name. She read out Cosette's name. I felt like my hand was going to break. Both Marius and Cosette were as white as sheets. I looked into Marius' eyes over the crowd and knew instantly what he was thinking. Anyone else. Anyone!
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Cosette walking towards the stage timidly. She looked so much smaller than she'd ever done before. It could have been her first year up for reaping if she hadn't come from the same age group as me.
I looked back at Marius and I could see he was about to cry. I knew exactly what I needed to do.
"I volunteer!" I shouted as loud as I could. Marius and Cosette looked at me in shock. And then I realised what I'd done.
