"Akira!"
I turned around and saw him. He was sitting by himself on a wooden bench under our tree….smiling at me. He looked more beautiful than ever at that moment for some reason. It couldn't have been the sunlight because he was surrounded by the tree's protective shadowy veil, nor could it have been the fact that he had seen me and glowed. Maybe it's because he naturally had the most beautiful smile that the gods could have graced Earth with. Maybe it's because he looked so….peaceful? Maybe.
I smiled and walked to him, flowers hidden behind my back. Today was our 5 year anniversary and I was finally going to propose to him like I promised Ruki I would.
"Better now while you still have time." he had said.
With the anticipation, I sped up my steps. When I was a few feet away from him, I could tell something was off. He usually got up and greeted me with open arms and soft kisses; now he was planted in his seat, not moving. He only smiled and looked at me with a blank stare. As I got closer, I noticed he wasn't looking at me, but something far away….almost unseeing. I stopped in my tracks as I realized why he did not greet me and felt my heart get ten times heavier.
"Kai?" I whispered shakily. No answer. Just a smile that had not faltered since we laid eyes on each other.
"Kai." I said again, this time with tears forming in my eyes. Nothing. I slowly stepped to him tears running freely now. I stroked his bald head and kissed it, a few tears falling on it. I set him so that he was lying on his back and closed his eyes and his lips. My name had been the last thing he would ever utter from those beautiful lips. Trembling greatly, I bent down to kiss him. He was still warm and his lips tasted like the cherry lip balm that I always loved. I stood up and placed the lilies on his chest.
"I love you, Kai." I whispered. "I will always love you."
