Chapter 1

It's been three months since my ex, Danny left me. Since then, I have been trying to get my head straight. I'm sitting at the local coffee shop, people watching on a Sunday morning, like I do every Sunday, sipping my coffee. I've lived here in Detroit all my life and I love it here. This town is so big that you sit and look at people and wonder if you will ever see the same person twice. I am sitting at the same table I do every Sunday morning and know the employees here by name and they know mine. "How's it going Dreva?" Rachel asks. "Good Rachel. How'd you do on that exam?" I ask, knowing she goes to the community college. "Good. Think I aced it." she tells me. "Good." I tell her. "How'd that meeting go the other day?" she asks. "Good. We got the account." I tell her. "That's amazing." she says before she moves to clean another table. I am sitting there lost in my thoughts, trying to figure out what I did wrong to make Danny leave when Rachel walks over to my table and puts a slice of banana nut bread down. "I didn't order this." I say. She smirks at me and says "I was asked to deliver it to you with this note." she says and I start looking around. "He asked me to deliver it after he left." she says. "Can you tell me what he looks like?" I ask. "Nope. He asked me not to tell you anything about him." she says. Picking up the note, she smiles as she walks off. Opening the note, I smile softly at what it says.

Beautiful day for people watching but all I see is you.

Signed Your Future Friend.

I look over at Rachel and she's smirking still. I look at the slice of banana nut bread and it's my favorite but I've never ordered any from here so how did he know what I liked? Lucky guess maybe? I finish off the bread and pick up my bag and head out. "See you later Rachel." I say. "Later Dreva." she says back.

I head home and re-read the note. Looking at the note, I can't help but smile. Why would someone send me a note? Why in the hell would someone be watching me? Wow. I finish getting things ready for work the next morning and put the note in my purse, and head to bed.

Waking up the next morning, I get up and head to work. Once I'm sitting at my desk, my friend Lisa comes over and asks "How was your weekend?" I smile softly and say "It was okay." She looks at me and asks "You okay?" I shake my head and say "Something strange happened yesterday. You know how I go to the coffee shop every Sunday morning?" I ask and she nods. "Well, I'm sitting there just staring out the window and thinking about this shit with Danny and the waitress brings over a slice of banana nut bread, my favorite, and when I tell her I didn't order it, she gives me a note. A guy asked her to wait until he left to deliver the bread and the note to me." I tell her and take the note out for her to read. "He's smooth. Gotta give him that." she tells me and I start laughing. "But why would someone be watching me?" I ask. "Honey, not all guys are like Danny. He's a moron. But this guy? Just see if he does anything else." she says and I just nod.

That night I get home and the more I think about the note and the more I think about Danny, the more I think that this is just a fluke. There's no way someone would be interested in me. I take the note and put it in the nightstand by the bed and head to bed for work the next day. I drift off to sleep with tears in my eyes...again.
