I'm a Yale Med school student with top honors. I knew better than to get drunk. I knew that I would only end up with a massive hangover.
I needed to drown my sorrows though, so here I am, with a throbbing headache. I don't regret getting drunk.
Anything would be better than the terrible heartache of last night. Who knew that one letter, just a few words, could cause me such pain.
I just can't believe it.
Six months ago we were so happy together. I had a promise ring on my finger, since we weren't quite ready for marriage yet, but quite certain that we would spend the rest of our lives together. I was sure that we would last forever.
I was wrong.
That spoiled rich girl ruined my perfect life.
It wasn't my fault that she couldn't find someone who loved her. It wasn't my fault that her father decided to blackmail my boyfriend into dating her for a few months.
My boyfriend was one of the top students in Yale, just like me, and the rich girl's father thought that he would make a good influence on his daughter.
He told me that he would only be living with her for a few months, just enough time to change her for the better. He told me that right afterwards he would come back to me.
He told me he loved me, not her. I believed him.
I shouldn't have.
I waited for him.
Two months passed, then three, and then it was four.
Soon, it was six months. I was still convinced he would come back.
That is, until I got the letter. The one letter, that invitation, which I didn't know would change my life. That was the letter I got last night.
In neat cursive, it had said: Miss Bailey Pickett.
Whoever had written it must have assumed that I was single.
They were right.
I opened the letter, thinking it must have been an invitation to a party.
My mouth had dropped in shock; I couldn't believe what I saw.
I realized that I had kept his promise ring, as I angrily slid it off my finger and threw it across the room.
He had broken his promise.
I looked at the main part of the letter once more to try to clear my head.
You have been invited to the wedding of Mr. Cody Martin and Ms. London Tipton.
