Luthien's Song

In ancient times, now only whispered myth
When Middle-earth was newly sown
I dwelt with Elven-kind - Doriath, my home
Though to Mortals my heart was prone –
To Beren, strong and handsome prince of Men
My love belonged to him alone.

Fate brought him to Doriath, my home
Fairest land since Middle-earth was sown
Perhaps it was Fate's cruel act of spite –
To have Beren glimpse me in the woods alone
When our eyes met, the verdict sealed
Our sad Destiny completely unknown

For you see, I am Elf-kind, immortal and wise;
Firstborn race when Middle-earth was sown.
Fair Beren, however, naught but Mortal –
To us love was a forbidden zone.
But love such as ours would not be quenched
We asked, "Bless this, our love that was sown!"
Alas, my father Thingol, though I love him much
Believes traditions are written in stone.

But Beren, not so easy to dissuade,
Went to save the greatest treasure known -
Yes! The Simaril, bright and mysterious gem,
Fairest of all since Middle-earth was sown
From the crown of Morgoth he did pluck
But with wounds that killed him – I was alone

To think what he did to win the love of my father
Would reduce him to lifeless bones –
And leave me alone, so alone
The grief was too much for a maiden such as I,
Even immortal Elves can be seared by love's moans
My spirit left my fair Doriath home
To wander the halls of Mandos, alone

Without Beren I knew I could not bear to be
Thus I sang to Mandos at the foot of his throne,
"Let me return to be Beren's own."
This I pleaded at the foot of his throne.
King Mandos had pity on me and my love
And bestowed death together – a gift from above,
A gift to Beren and the Mortal Elf, his own –
The two truest lovers since Middle-earth was sown.
