"The Promise of a Kiss"

Author's Note: OK, this is my first venture into NCIS territory, but I've loved it for years (even before it was "cool"). I love the chemistry between Gibbs and Abby, so here's a quick little one-shot.

There were many super cool parts about her job. Abby loved that she got to help people and catch bad guys. She loved the technology she got to play with… even if Major Mass Spec was on her list right now. She loved her co-workers and she loved her lab. But more than that, she loved her rewards for a job well-done. The Caff-Pows that Gibbs brought her were nice cause she'd totally fall asleep on her desk without them. But, she loved the kisses most of all.

When a new case would come in, she'd get her babies up and running, so when the team brought her the evidence she'd be all ready to go. Then she'd start plowing through the samples, searching for that tiny bit of adhesive or whatever that would bring the criminal to justice. She thought that last bit should be done with a big booming voice-over voice. That would be cool.

She'd find that piece of whatever… and then she'd wait. She'd wait for that tell-tale ding of the elevator that said he was on his way. It always made her heart race and she thought about making it the text message sound on her cell phone. Abby decided she liked the novelty of it only coming from the elevator, though, so her text message sound was a duck instead.

The ding would sound and in he'd sweep with his coffee in one hand and her Caff-Pow in the other. She might tease him a bit and he'd use that no-nonsense voice with her and she'd share her discovery that would bring him new leads on his case. And then, if she was lucky, and the evidence was particularly good, he'd lean in, smelling of sawdust, and press his lips to her cheek. Then he'd be gone, leaving a whiff of coffee and cedar or pine lingering behind him.

One of the reasons she worked so hard was, obviously, to catch the bad guys, but another was so that Gibbs would have a reason to kiss her cheek. Granted, if she asked him, he'd say that he didn't really need a reason to kiss her cheek, but Abby didn't know that. She just went back to her machines and worked to find more evidence. Until she found something good, she at least had the promise of a kiss.
