"She comes with the first snow," the old woman says.
Now Rodney knows why they keep their children inside, and the fires burning all night.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"It's ridiculous," Caldwell says. He looks to Elizabeth and then to Carson. "And yet neither of you seem keen to point that out to him."
Half an hour later, Caldwell's back on the Daedalus and Rodney's leading Teyla and Ronon through the gate.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
She's determined - he'll give her that. Winds stronger than anything he's ever seen, even in Antarctica and Siberia, try to push them back to the gate or bury them in drifts of smothering white.
But she's not as stubborn as he is, and he has more to lose.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Not many oppose me," she whispers. Blood billows on her lips, staining her skin.
Rodney keeps his gun aimed until her heart stops. "I never knew any other way."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They find him in the highest room of the tallest tower, of course. His skin is like porcelain and Rodney thinks they're too late. He won't give up, though – not now. He lifts the still body into his arms, and waits.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"She was cold," John says. He arches into Rodney's touch, a little. Whenever Rodney moves, John moves with him, unconsciously seeking the warmth. He wraps himself around Rodney and holds on.
