A/N this is a shot drabble about the relationship between Lily and Snape. This contains spoilers for deathly Hallows in a way but not for the final outcome of the book. Just the whole Snape's past stuff and why he did the things he did.
Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter films, books or characters.
Lily sat by the lake thinking about what had happened today.
Severus had called her a mudblood. She couldn't believe it. He'd told her it had just slipped out but that didn't matter. He'd still done it.
James had stuck up for her but then that shouldn't have shocked her. James to every opportunity to try and impress her but he'd never succeeded. He was just to arrogant and she was in love with someone else.
She'd been in love with Severus for a long time. He'd been the first person to spot her talent and tell her about the wizarding world. But he'd called her a mudblood. Maybe he was in a bad place due to the actions of Potter and his gang but still she'd been defending him. She had done for a long time but not any more. She couldn't handle him treating her like that.
It was bad enough she had Potter asking her out all the time. Sure Potter was alright looking but he just wasn't what she wanted.
He wasn't Severus. But things would be different now. Could it change her feelings for James? She sincerely doubted but she'd be less quick to stick up for Severus now. He had broken their friendship but maybe not their love.
"Lily." She heard his voice behind her. It had the effect it always had. She always wanted to turn around and hug him. Maybe even kiss him but she would have to learn to suppress that urge.
He'd come to apologise again. She honestly wanted to forgive him but she just couldn't. he had harmed her too much.
"I can't talk to you." She told him calmly before heading up to the castle Severus on her heels.
"You just have to listen. I'm really sorry."
"Yes you said that before but it won't change what happened. You called me a mudblood when I was sticking up for you."
"I know but Potter was being his usual self and I'd called you it before I had processed it. Please forgive me." he asked her. He sounded so desperate for her forgiveness but she just couldn't forgive him.
So she walked away. Trying to force away the tear building as she walked away from the man she had cared to deeply for since they were so young. But she didn't turn back. Not ever.
Maybe they could have had something. Something amazing. Something that could have lasted for a lifetime. At least that's what she thought. But it was in the past now. They weren't friends anymore. And their love had to be left to wither and die.
Over the rest of her time at Hogwarts she knew he watched her. He was always watching her. But he'd given up on trying to be friends with her. She knew that she hurt him greatly though when she started dating James.
It had shocked her too when he'd grown up and she'd found her self accepting him and she soon realised she loved James more that she'd ever loved Severus.
But that did not change the fact that theirs was a love that could have been.
