What Makes Me Love You
Oneshot, Kataang
By Lady Wolfy
"Can we take a breaaak, PLEASE?" Sokka whined, dramatically collapsing on the ground. Toph rolled her blind eyes.
"Snoozles this is important business. Finding Aang a firebending teacher effects the fate of the world. Do you think we're going to just stop for an hour so you can rest your feet?" Katara sighed at their small argument and looked back at Aang, who was watching them all from behind with an odd expression on his face. Sokka's and Toph's argument easily became white noise to her ears, as soon as she saw Aang's face.
"What's wrong, Aang?" Katara asked with concern. Aang shook his head, dazed, and looked her in the eyes.
"Let's take a break," he agreed softly. Katara watched in amazement as Aang went to sit on a rock, a little ways away from the rest of them. Toph smirked and dragged Sokka over to a shady spot under a tree, Momo and Appa following.
Katara didn't move. She watched as Aang tucked his knees under his chin and hugged his legs, his silver eyes downcast. Frowning, she went to sit next to him.
"It isn't like you to want to take a break," she observed quietly. Aang didn't answer, but he turned to look at her again, and bit his lower lip.
Katara, his first and only love, the girl he had to hide his feelings from all the time. Katara, the girl he could never get involved with because it would put her very life in danger. What was it about her that made him love her so much? The blue of her eyes? The smoothness of her skin? Or was it beyond her stunning beauty. The way she encouraged, inspired, and fought? The way she cared and loved... Everything about her, he decided. Even her motherly instincts. All the things that made her Katara were all the things that Aang loved about her.
"Aang?" Katara said his name quietly, and Aang nearly blushed. He shook his head again, trying to shake the thoughts away, and turned to look at her again.
"I just needed to sit down," he said quietly. "I've had too much on my mind lately."
"Like what?" Katara baited.
"Just about..." You. Us. Love. "...Finding a firebending teacher. Destroying the Fire Lord..." Katara took his words in, nodding carefully.
"You know you're not alone. I'll always be here for you, Sokka and Toph, too." Will you?
"What about after the war?"Aang whispered. "If the Fire Lord falls, will you leave me?" Katara's eyes widened.
"If you want me around, I'll stay." Aang's heart missed a beat.
"Won't you... I don't know... get married and leave?" Katara's cheeks flushed. She glanced away, trying to hide it.
"I'll never leave if you want me here. No one will make me leave you, and besides... I want to marry someone who loves me, and will let me make my own choices... And I would never choose to leave you." Katara turned back to Aang, and took his hand as the blush faded from her face. Aang loosened his legs from their position and smiled at Katara.
"Thank you," he whispered. Katara smiled.
"No need to thank me," she told him. "Come on, let's keep going." Katara jumped off the rock and called to Sokka and Toph, who seemed to be arm wrestling. From where Aang sat, he could see that Toph was cheering and Sokka was weeping.
He then looked at Katara, wondering if he could be the one to marry her some day.. After the war, when all was better in the world.
What exactly made him love Katara? Many things, obviously, but it wasn't just her looks and her bravery, it was something else.
She made him happy, made him want to keep fighting. One day, maybe she would choose him as her husband, but for now Aang would love her with all of his heart, and pray that one day he would be that lucky man.
