Building Higher
It's so hard to keep doing this,
To let someone else in-
When everyone knows that
It's better to have loved and lost-
"What if that's all I do?
Love and lose?"
&
With every beating raindrop
The question intensifies.
From up here it feels as if I'll never fall down,
Yet the boundaries I walk
Are tried again everyday.
"It's dangerous" I know
"What have I got to lose?"
&
--That I haven't lost already?
&
I breathe in the heavy smell of ammonia,
And flick away the sensors,
As smart as they are—
Incomparable to you,
It's not as easy as I thought it would be
To go on living.
&
I can sit here all day long now,
And think of what I can't find,
But I know if I want to move forward
A little,
I have to build up the walls
Higher than they were before.
