There was nothing extravagant; no special event to mark the day that D and Leon finally got over themselves. No first dates, long walks along the board walk, or trips to the movies. They didn't need any of that to say they cared, and they were both too stubborn to be the first to extend the invitation.
(Tetsu said the Count needed to "stop being such a pussy", and Leon needed to "start being a man already", but they both struck similarly indignant poses when he said this and he didn't bother trying again)
Chris didn't notice the change – he noticed very little, in fact, for all the wonders he could see – but the animals of Count D's pet shop weren't stupid. They noticed how D and Leon sat a little closer than usual on the aptly named 'loveseat', and how Leon watched D with that rather far-away look as he moved about the room making tea or tending to the customers (who were just as much animals as the pets were).
Leon still proclaimed loudly about once a week that, one day, he was going to catch D once and for all, but the intent behind it was lost. It was almost contractual at this point, and it was probably just a habit developed from the many years he had been saying it. He had stopped going through D's mail and listening to D's phone conversations, and he only followed him on his 'business meetings' when he felt the other man might really be in danger. He had completely let his guard down, and the pets noticed idly that he was the first human to ever do that around D and survive unscathed.
And some nights, when the shop was closed and Chris was in bed, Leon would lay his head on D's lap, and the animals couldn't miss the spark of wonder that twinkled in D's eyes as he smoothed the coarse blond hair out of Leon's relaxed face.
They kissed; often enough to overlook their little spats but never anything as ostentatious as some of the love-drugged animals that inhabited the shop displayed. They tried to keep their couple status out of sight whenever Chris was around and, much to the surprise of the animals, it worked. Tetsu had asked Chris once why he never noticed what was going on between D and his brother, what with the pheromones practically wafting off of them, but all he got in response was a confused, "what are pheromones?"
But as the animals of Count D's pet shop watched the makeshift family exit the store – a motley bunch consisting of an incredibly effeminate Chinese man, a loud, crass American, a mute younger brother, a goat-like creature and a raccoon – and D & Leon twined their fingers together gently behind Chris's back, the animals figured their love was in the small things.

First D x Leon fic! Woot! Man, I love these guys. The end of the series was touching. Annoyingly angsty, but touching none the less. Unfortunately, it left the whole issue of them getting together (oh come on, they might as well be cannon) to us fanfic writers. So here I am! Yay. I haven't written for a while now, so I kind of forced this out this morning in the hopes that it would get the creativity flowing. Now that our power is back on I'm getting a bit distracted (I can play my music now, and I can't write when I'm listening to music). I'm so bad.
