A baby.

Patrick Jane leaned back against the tree, using it for support as the concept threatened to overwhelm him.

Just days ago, he had been distressed, conflicted, with no direction. Now - he watched as Lisbon smirked in his direction while she walked towards Wiley - he was a husband again. He would soon be a father again.

He already knew he wanted a girl - a little girl with dark curls, big green eyes, Lisbon's temper and his wit - though from the way Lisbon dealt with Wiley as he attempted to refuse her request to dance, he knew she would probably be more comfortable with a boy.

Jane smiled as Lisbon tugged Wiley - all blushing deer in headlights - towards her, leaning up to whisper something in his ear. He imagined she had been like that with her own brothers when they'd been Wiley's age. Reassuring, comforting, safe.

As he watched her lead the young agent towards the other dancers, he marvelled at how she had managed to surprise him yet again.

His initial thought when she led him to the pond, away from their guests, was that she just needed a break. She was never one for the spotlight, and he couldn't imagine she ever would be.

Instead, she'd told him her plan to ask Cho for a desk job "probably in a couple of months… and then I'll need some time off... maybe six to 12 months."

She'd glanced at him, to see if her words had sunk in, slight panic crossing her face at his sharp intake of breath.

"You mean…you're… we're…"

She'd nodded, chewing on her bottom lip uncertainly - clearly afraid of his reaction - and his heart almost broke.

"We're having a baby?" he'd whispered, reaching for her hand.

Any fear she'd felt went away instantly, when his face broke into a grin.

"You didn't know?" she'd asked, "You really didn't know?"

He'd shaken his head, delighting in her reaction to the news.

"I surprised you," she'd told him with a grin, "the cup, telling you I loved you, and now our baby, that's three times in the last two months."

"Three…" There was that number again. Three free games, three legged dog, three surprises, and now three of them - a mother, a father and a baby.

"You're happy, right? I mean, I know this is unexpected…"

Jane had stood and pulled her into his arms, "I never thought it would be possible to be so happy… I can't wait to meet our little Lisbon."

"Or Jane.."

He'd smile, imagining the two of them, raising a family together.

"Let's go spend some time with our family," Lisbon had told him. And they were family. Her brothers, Pete and Sam, Wiley, Abbott, Cho, Rigsby and Van Pelt…

He felt that even more as he watched her, dancing with a fumbling, stumbling Wiley, who was trying desperately not to step on her toes or her dress.

Struggling to take his eyes from his wife's face for more than a few seconds, he glanced at Wiley, seeing the young agent smile and look a little more confident.

Jane felt rather than heard Abbott approach and stand beside him.

"How long are you going to let that go on?" his boss asked, gesturing towards the pair, and Jane's mind flew back to that moment Lisbon walked out the door with Pike.

"Three songs," he turned to the man who'd become such a friend and ally. It seemed an appropriate number given recent events. "He gets three songs, then I'm not letting her go for the rest of the night."
