We were in the hospital's waiting room. Normally, we'd be all around this place searching it for our friend but this wasn't normal circumstances and we didn't dare try to disturb the adults working to save Wally's life.
Hoagie was sitting with his head in his hands, shaking his head every so often. Kuki was sobbing in Abby's arms. She was the one who found Wally, blood soaking out of his wrists into the puddle of blood.
I wished I had volunteered to get Wally out of his room for dinner. She shouldn't have had to see him like that.
Things have changed so much since we left the KND for the TND. We were now fifteen and had a world ahead of us. I guess Wally didn't see it that way.
I blame myself. I'm the team leader. I should have kept an eye on him ever since his parents divorced. Ever since Kuki got yet another boyfriend. Ever since last week when he walked in with said boyfriend on top of Kuki and the boy ended up in the same hospital we were in right now. Number three was furious.
Kuki's crying broke me out of my silent blame game. I knew she blamed herself, too. She hadn't spoken to him all week. It was my idea for Kuki to go get Wally even though she refused a few times until being convinced to go.
"Family of Wallabee Beatles?" one of Wally's doctor's walked out. His mother, holding Joey's hand, stood up. His dad was all the way on the other side of the country with his new family, the woman he left his wife for. She was crying as much as Kuki was.
"He's going to be all right," when the words came out of the doctor's mouth I breathed a sigh of relief. "But he lost a lot of blood. He'll have to stay here for a little bit."
Mrs. Beatles nodded her head. "Can we see him?"
"Sure," the doctor said. Hoagie and I made a move to get up but the doctor lifted his hand. "Family only first."
So we waited the agonizing minutes as Mrs. Beatles and Joey visited. Mrs. Beatles came out a bit more sober but still was having the teary hiccups. Joey's eyes were red as if he had cried a little bit too.
"C-can w-we c-ome e-e-in?" the deep breaths Kuki was taking disrupted her speech.
"Of course," the doctor said and Abby helped Kuki walk to the room just down the hallway.
Wally was staring directly at the ceiling when we came in. Kuki managed to find her footing as she rushed to him and put her arms around his neck. His bandaged wrists came around her as he returned the hug.
He tried to let go after a while but she kept holding on. "I'm so sorry," she whispered.
"Don't be," he whispered back.
Hoagie and Abby decided this was probably be a private moment and headed out. I followed them before looking back behind me. He scooted over and she got on the hospital bed with him. She curled into his frame as he kissed the top of her head.
I would have to keep a closer eye on him in the future, but for right now, he was in capable hands.
