Why the Grass is Green
Why is the grass green? Did God make it that way? I will tell you why the grass is green. It is green because the trees are green, the trees are green because bushes are green, and bushes are green because… I don't know why. This story doesn't have to do with why grass is green. This story has to do with a shadowy figure; well that is how the story starts. My grandpa told me this story when I was a little girl, around 5 or 6. He had his glasses on, the ones that make him look more like a grandpa. He was sitting in the dark green leather spiny chair. This is how I picture him when I think of him. Anyway this is how he began the story:
Sally couldn't sleep. It was raining lightly; there was a patter, patter sound on the window. One street lamp was on. She saw a shadowy figure running on the deserted road. She blinked to see if she was dreaming. She wasn't dreaming. She was sure of that. What had she seen then, a person in dark clothes in a cape? It was weird. Sally thought she was just too tired and needed to get a goodnight rest. She lay back in bed put her book down and knitted on here scarf she was working on. She then closed her eyes and started thinking about the day. She had woken up on the wrong side of the bed. She had messy hair and her alarm hadn't gone off. She had had to rush and eat her bread without being toasted. She got butter in her hair while smudging it onto the bread. When she had arrived at school she had been late, wasn't that new? Lauren was waiting for her inside the building. Sally guessed that the bell had just rung. Lauren shook her head slowly as she examined Sally. Her messy not brushed hair. Her yellow teeth, that hadn't been brushed. Her muddy shoes that she had slipped on so quickly she had forgotten a sock. Her shirt that was all wrinkly. She looked like she always did. Bridgett walked by Sally and pushed into her only to continue walking to her locker. "Bridgett's an idiot," mumbled Lauren.
"More like a stupid butt," grunted Sally. They walked along the corridor and Sally saw the shadowy figure again turning the corner. "Um Lauren…" asked Sally quietly.
"What? Speak up, I can't hear you." Lauren's voice was as loud as a thunder storm less than a mile away. She had won first place for loudest scream and loudest shout for girls and boys.
"I said… did you see that um… person…who uh just turned the corner?" Sally said quieter than a mouse.
"No. But I do see Annabelle. Who could be as quiet and as shy as her?"
"LAUREN! Be nice."
"I am it is just, well, she seems nice and all but it would be hard to talk with her."
"Lauren, do you remember Patty?" Not even letting Lauren answer Sally continued. "Well she and Patty were best friends. But then when…" It was too horrible to talk about. They stopped at their lockers and got there stuff. Then they hurried to Mr. Janda for homeroom. Jade, Jenna, and Dana (as usual) were already in their seats trying to be teacher pets. This was going to be a long week, that's all Sally could think.
That was when grandpa would stop, and clean his glasses off. Then he would clear his throat, and continue.
