Comparison
His cheek is too smooth and his hair is too long. His voice is too high and she fights the urge to laugh. He reminds her of Ricky Hamilton – the boy she lost her virginity to in the back of his car.
She called House but he didn't answer. Probably with Stacy. She wanted to feel something. Anything. She knew if he would reject her and, in the end, she would feel hurt. But he wouldn't answer his phone so she went to Chase instead.
Chase is easy. Chase is weak. His hands are too soft and she wants friction.
It's all over too fast and not fast enough. She doesn't come and she feels sick and dirty and stupid.
Chase feels confused.
His cheek is rough and she smiles when his stubble scratches her neck. She hopes he never shaves. His hair is thinning and he growls when she tugs on it. His voice is low and ragged. She remembers how she fell in love with his voice first. He grins when she sighs.
Three weeks ago he bought her lunch and delivered it to the lab himself. Then, last week, they watched "General Hospital" together in his office. Later, this morning, he gave her a wink and told her she had always been his favorite. And an hour ago he had appeared at her front door looking absolutely terrified.
"You once asked me if I liked you and I said 'No'," he had said. "I wanna take it back."
Time seems to have stopped and everything has fallen away from them. They're surprised by how well they fit together.
