His voice was barely a whisper when he called out her name. She turned, tilted her head upwards and looked from the wet, muddy ground to him. She greeted him politely, smiled sadly, and bowed her head again.
He asked her all sorts of things, voice mixed with worry and relief: Was she okay? Did The Demon take her that night? Did she run? Why was she here, alone, sitting on a wooden park bench in the pouring rain?
Her smile never wavered, and she answered each question softly: Yes. No. Yes. Just because.
She let her gaze fall to the ground once again; no one would, or should, be able to stand the pained look in his eyes. His big, adorable, green, puppy-dog eyes; which for the record are a certain type of eyes that should never hold any sort of sadness. It just did not suit them.
He told her he'd been looking for her; she thanked him.
He told her that he was afraid; she told him she was too.
She was a ghost of the girl he'd met before, he said to her sadly; yes, yes, she was, she agreed.
And then, he offered her something. Something he shouldn't have offered, for all sorts of reasons, but offered anyway.
He said she could come with them, become a hunter, kill this damn thing, learn more about herself, and her powers.
She said, "Thanks, but I'm broken."
