The Manhattan streets that I walked nightly were unusually calm tonight. Normally you would hear street cars honking and speeding past one another. Or music blaring from one of the nearby clubs. And more often than not, someone getting mugged the next street over. But with our cat ears you would hear even more with your hearing amplified much higher than any humans. We can hear the slightest squeaking of well-oiled brakes. We can hear stem pouring out of the man-hole covers. But not tonight. It's as if everything, living and inanimate, was dormant for the time being.
"You seem confused."
I backed up a few steps to look down an alleyway. I could have sworn that not a soul was about as I passed it less than a second ago. But, to my surprise, a peculiar, pink-and-purple tabby with a bushy tail looked at me from the other end of the alleyway.
"I wouldn't choose a book by its cover. No, I am not confused. Puzzled by the soundlessness on what would otherwise be a noisy night, and the spontaneity of our encounter, yes. But confused, no." I replied.
"My, my, you have quite the extensive vocabulary. I didn't mean confused about your surroundings. What I should have said was; 'You don't seem to know yourself.'"
"It's none of your business to weather I know myself or not, and I happen to know my self very well, thank you. Now please, if you have nothing else of importance to tell me, let me be on my way."
"Is it against the law here to try to meet someone new?"
"I have asked you to leave me alone. It is my right, and if the group does not respect the right of the individual, the group itself cannot exist for long."
