"Mommy! Mommy!" I yelled, running with a happy smile on my face. My eyes were held with nothing but joy and my heart was filled with nothing but love. "Mommy! I got something for you!"
She turned to see me, her face clouded in shadows. "Really hunny?" She questioned with what sounded like a smile.
"Uh-huh!" I stopped before her, hands behind my back, clasping something I wished not for her to see…not yet.
"Well dear, what is it?" She asked kindly.
"You have to guess." I told her childishly.
She laughed warmly and kneeled down so we were eye level. "Hmmm…let me see. Is it…a puppy?"
I shook my head. "Nope! Guess again!"
I think she smiled as she titled her head towards what must have been the sky, thinking. "How about a cake?" She looked back to me.
I shook my head again and laughed. "Nope!"
"Well I guess I'll just have to find out!" Her hands outstretched towards me and, for once, I felt no fear. As her fingers brushed my stomach I had to need to guard or flinch. Within a few seconds I was laughing, her gentle hands tickling me in a loving way.
"Come now -----, let me see it!" She was laughing, as was I, but I couldn't hear my name.
I didn't care.
"No!" I screamed, twisting in her grasp. This was…fun.
Only a few seconds later and I could no longer stand it. "Okay, okay!" She let go as I held out my hands, a golden rose lying a top them.
She took in a deep breath, I wasn't sure what that meant. Did she hate it? Did she hate me for it?
She didn't.
"Oh ----- hunny, this is beautiful!" She must have been smiling as she said my name, but I couldn't tell.
"Then you like it?" I asked, suddenly afraid.
She looked to me, the rose held tightly in her hand. "Yes hunny, I love it, and I love you."
I smiled as she embraced me. I clung to her, clung to her as if I was going to lose her. As if she was going to lose me. I didn't want to lose her…
But I did.
Within seconds her arms began to loosen around me and her warmth began to part. My smile departed as I looked to see what was happening.
But I couldn't see her.
"Mommy!" I screamed frantically, my legs beginning to move. "Mommy!" My call became more desperate as my legs quickened. It was only moments later when I found her.
Her body, covered in blackness, her face, shrouded in shadows, her hands, empty.
"M…M…" I couldn't get it out. "MOMMY!" I screamed and fell beside her.
She didn't speak, she didn't move, she was already past that point. Her body was past its limits and her soul was past the gates.
"Mommy…" I cried, the tears streaming down my face being lost in the darkness that covered her. I lifted my head and saw the golden rose I had given her laying on the ground beside her. I reached for it and grasped it lightly, holding it in front of me, fresh tears running down my face.
Soon the rose began to disintegrate. Horrified, I quickly tried to grasp it, but it fell apart through my fingers. Looking to the ground my tears became thicker as my memory progressed.
I remembered her…
I remembered her death…
I remembered her horror…
I remembered my pain.
Below me was a pile of the one thing that had taken away my happiness, taken away my life, taken away my mother…
I surrounded me…
I protected me…
It corrupted me…
I was what my rose had been…
What it had become…
