Disclaimer: DON'T OWN IT!
Although he hadn't felt any pain, he felt the pressure on his hand, the comforting grasp on his shoulder, the tears that fell onto his body as his two best friends held him.
It had only taken seconds. One moment, he was still surrounded by the darkness he had been living in for a month.
But the next moment, his eyes were opening, and he was lying on a bed in a hotel room that was all too familiar.
He had been here before.
"Teach me..."
Mark shook the thought from his head, surprised to find that there was absolutely no soreness left in his body.
He felt light as air.
Then he heard it: the soft whimper of a voice that must have belonged to an angel.
He slowly turned his face to the side, catching a glimpse of dark hair.
Her face was hidden in her hands, her fingers clutching onto the strands of hair that fell through her finger tips.
Mark couldn't believe his eyes.
"L-Lexie?"
Her face bounced upwards, tears spreading quickly across her cheeks. She quickly stood from the ground, looking fragile and beautiful all at once.
"Mark," she whimpered.
She quietly made her way over to him.
Seeing her alive- or the closest thing to it- was incredible to Mark.
"You w-weren't supposed to die," Lexie mumbled.
Tears cascaded down Mark's face. He wasn't even going to try to hide them as he forced himself to stop feeling numb and pushed his way off of the bed.
"Neither were you," he gasped out, and grabbed the younger girl, pulling her into his arms.
Lexie sobbed into his chest, holding on tightly to the man she loved.
Finally Mark pulled away and smiled through the tears in his eyes, holding Lexie's tear-covered face in his hands.
"I couldn't imagine living without you."
Lexie's lip quivered and she forced a grin as well, laughing and crying all at once.
She quickly leaned in and pressed her lips firmly to Mark's. His response to the kiss was almost immediate, but he kissed her slowly and passionately.
He backed them up until the back of his knees hit the bed, and he pulled Lexie down into his lap. Her knees straddled his hips as she pulled her face away.
"We don't have to rush this," Lexie whispered. "We have forever."
"I know," Mark said.
The tears were drying on their face, and neither of them breathed. They didn't have to.
Mark was surprised that his lungs didn't burn with the lack of air, but then he remembered his situation.
"Forever," he finally agreed. "Lexie, will you marry me?"
Lexie giggled. "I don't think it works like that here," she said.
"I just need to hear you say yes," Mark responded. "I need to know that if we were alive-"
"Yes," Lexie said simply and rested her head against Mark's shoulder.
Mark grinned widely. "I love you."
"I love you too."
"Are we like... in heaven?"
"Sort of. We are living inside a memory right now. But we can go anywhere, and see anybody who we've lost." Mark nodded as Lexie explained. "Mark, will you just hold me?"
"Of course."
He pulled Lexie back into his arms until they were lying flat on the bed, faces inches apart, wrapped in each other's embrace.
"Mark..."
Lexie got a sneaky smirk on her face and she bit her lip.
"Lexie...?" Mark raised an eyebrow. "What are you thinking about?"
Lexie ran her fingers through Mark's hair and pressed her lips close to his ear. The words she whispered brought back memories and new hope for the two of them.
"Teach me..."
A/N: So there you have it. I had to write this to say goodbye to the two of them, but at least they are together now. Apparently Shonda didn't want to kill Mark off, but she had no other way to justify him leaving. Any other way would include him abandoning Callie and his daughter.
RIP McSteamy and Little Grey.
We will miss you two!
