Forever ends today

They all seemed to forget that William Herondale hadn't been born in the institute with a sarcastic smirk on his face and arrogance in his eyes. He hid it so well, no one could quite remember what the four year old Will had been like, or what the seven year old had been like, except for Will, himself. He could remember times when the world had been innocent and demon hunting had been an exciting job for the future. When he'd had friends.
Yes, friends, as in the plural.
;
Two children sat on grassy hill surrounded by a radiant glow of sunshine and what seemed to be acres of flowers, spreading so far over the horizon that they just became a messy blur of colour. The boy's startling blue eyes were highlighted by the mischievous grin spread across his face as he crumbled several small pieces of his sandwich on to the head of the girl beside him. Her eyes were bright, violet in the sun, and she smiled serenely, looking around her, knowing but not quite caring about the crumbs falling around her like confetti.
;
Will could still remember that day in the deep unfathomable corners of his mind where the cold hardening of his heart hadn't yet spread. He could remember the wind blowing on his face as he chased the girl, threatening to push her into a duck pond, while she ran, laughing, hair flying and face beaming as she turned around for a fraction of a second to stick her tongue out at him. He missed her, she and Cecily and his family, he missed them all but of course there was no time to dwell on it. He was a shadowhunter.
He was William Herondale and feelings and regrets were nothing.
;
He buried all those feelings under brick walls that were virtually impossible to break. His one mistake though, was to let a little bit of himself still care and to be unprepared to cope with what reality was going to throw in front of him.
He was oblivious to her until she stepped out of the shadows and straight into his path, she nearly bowled him over before he recognised her. He was about to utter some very sarcastic, very Will comment when his eyes found hers and recognised the bright shimmering violet.
"Lou.. Louise, what are you doing here?" He almost choked the words out in a very un-dignified, un-Will manner and he stared at her. She shrugged, and held out her fist in front of his face, the familiar mark traced into her skin, mirrored the similar one on his. The mark every shadowhunter had. She found recognition in his eyes and he found change in hers, she wasn't the same Louise, she had a lot more steel, a lot more will power.
;
She comes back to the institute with him, is introduced as an old friend to the collective surprise of the dining room. She has perfect manners, charms them all and Will can't help but feel proud of her because she's his Louise.
Later that night she kisses him, shows him that she's not the sweet little girl he left, she's grown up. She laughs when he asks her why she must go to her room now. She smiles as she leaves the room, a newfound arrogance she seemed to have kidnapped from him in her step, leaving promises she can't keep behind her.
He knows this and he can't help but smile at this small change to his usual routine.
;
The last time he stares into those eyes, he sees hurt and betrayal, he sees that he's wrecked another life, hurt another 'friend'. He barely has the time to catch a glimpse of her as she brushes past him, delivering a few words into his ear in response to the earlier question before raising a hand in farewell to the other inhabitants of the institute. She tells them she's going home to care for a sick aunt but he knows it's not true. She was never that good at lying, too sweet.
"I thought you said forever Louise, I thought nothing would change that?"
"Yeah? Well forever ends today"
