Author's note: I don't like romantic stories that includes death of one of the lovers but I had to do something for a change. Enjoy!
The Lost Rose (One-shot)
"Thief! Somebody help!" an fearful scream echoed through the streets of Viridian City. He was in a hurry. He needed to get out of there before the cops showed up.
The scream belonged to an old woman. She had curly grey hair, glasses in top of her nose with wrickles in every part of her face. She held a little basket with different types of colorful flowers: she was a florist.
In the top of her little shop could be read "Karen's Garden". The place was calm and tiny, full of clay pots with great variety of flowers. Everyone who stopped there would say that was a tranquil and pleasant place but now was anything but tranquil.
"Miss, Is everything fine?" a cerulean-haired police officer named Jenny asked very concerned for the civilian's safety.
"A blue-haired guy stole a bucket of flowers from my store." Karen replied, cleaning the tears from her eyes with a tissue.
"It's lavender!" James screamed at a certain distance from the two ladies, rushing through worried and curious citizens.
Jenny gritted her teeths in pure hatred "I'm going to arrest him, Miss. I'll get your belongings back!" Jenny assured.
"Ohh, thank you so much!" the lady thanked, finishing to clean her tired eyes.
Jenny ran behind James at a tremendous speed. The officers in Kanto received a special and hard training before starting to work in real crimes but Jenny knew this one would be easy to stop.
James looked behind his back, his legs never ceased to stop. It was instintive. He needed to find it quickly: he couldn't disappoint her.
"Stop right there!" Jenny forced, picking the handcuffs from her belt "You need to pay for that!"
James gulped but ignored the warning, grabbing firmly the pot with red and vivid roses. He could feel Jenny getting closer and closer to him but it wasn't time to give up.
He forgot everything from before when he noticed the ancient cemetery surrounded with trees and bushes. The only sound around was the bird pokemon cheaping as they flew above the tombstones.
James stopped at the metal gates and entered quietly, not daring to look back and see if he was still a target of the police.
Jenny stopped too and looked at the man walking silently inside the cemetery. She decided to follow him at a calm pace to see what was his real intention.
James stopped again but this time in front of a little tombstone and set the pot of roses on top of the grave.
His knees came in contact with the grass and he stood gloomy in front of the grave. Inscribed on the rock was the name of a woman: Jessie Musashi, along with the date of birth and death.
James pulled one rose from the pot and let his tears freely ran through his cheeks. He missed her so much. The day he lost her was the worst of his life and Meowth...he left him behind because of James's depression after Jessie's loss. He wasn't the same happy and funny man from before, now he was just a shattered man.
Jenny carefully came closer to him and touched his shoulder, not wanting to scare him.
"If you wanted the flowers, why didn't you pay for them?" Jenny asked softly sitting at his side.
James sobbed "I-I'm sorry! I'm completely broke" he replied with sorrow fullfilling his emerald eyes.
Jenny's guilt took the best of her. She was following a man who lost the love of his life and was alone in a cruel world just because a bunch of flowers. She knew it was her duty.
She searched for her wallet in her skirt's pocket and picked 10 pokedollars, handing them to James.
"Here. Take the money and pay for the flowers" Jenny smiled as she closed the few notes of money in James's hand.
James watched speechless as the cop closed his fist. After all those years in the world of crime, an officer was being mercifull with him.
"Thank you" he whispered grabbing his legs with his arms. The silence between them unfolded for several seconds.
"H-How did you lost her?" Jenny inquired a little bit afraid of her own question.
James sighed, the palm of his hand brushing his eyes "I lost her after a mission which went wrong"
Flashback*
The click of the gun filled the air. A bullet discharged like a bolt of lightning. It trespassed the woman's chest quickly.
She fell on the floor with a scream of pain. Her companions ran at the bloody scene without even thinking.
"Jessie!" James screamed grabbing her gloved hand " You're bleeding!"
He grabbed her bridal style and sped off of the building, the scratch cat pokemon following behind the pair.
The next day was miserable. He tried to find an hospital that wouldn't judge them for being Team Rocket's members or say that she wouldn't have a chance of surviving. But James never lost hope.
He find a cabin and remained there, trying to treat Jessie's chest wound. She fought every hour to survive and James tried his best to save her. But her time came quickly.
"J-James, I can't hold the pain anymore!" she said with difficulty.
James shook his head "Don't Jessie! Don't give up! You still have a long life waiting for you!"
"You'll find a reason to live. Just don't forget I'll be watching you...from the stars."
"NO! YOU'RE MY REASON TO LIVE!"
She grabbed him one last time and planted a kiss on his lips. James kissed her back, her body falling into his arms. She had finnaly flown with the wind.
"Jess? JESSIE!" he tighed the grip around her as he felt no heartbeat and no breathing coming from Jessie's body.
James and Meowth made a little funeral for her the next day. They were the only ones present in her departure from the world. At least they would always remember her the way she really was: a fierce and strong woman.
*Flashback ends*
I'm so sorry for your loss" Jenny said with a whisper.
"She's in a better place now. I'm sure" James looked at the sunset and noticed the first star of the upcoming night: It shone alone in the sky, her light twinkling in James's eyes.
"I'll be watching you from the stars"
