I posted this on tumblr a few days ago in response to a picture E (random_ship) had drawn by the same name I'm using for this story. I've used the picture as the cover for this for easy viewing, but ff net kept messing with it, so go over to E's tumblr to see the full image, and all her other fabulous works. Hope you enjoy!
"Mama?"
Kate looked up from the paperwork she had spread out on the kitchen counter as her son toddled over to her, smiling when she saw him wearing his mini police vest.
"What's up, Ev?" She asked as she lifted him onto her lap.
"I have juice please?" Evan replied, blinking his big blue eyes up at her.
Kate laughed as she stood up from the barstool and deposited her son on the countertop as she moved to the fridge to grab the juice. As she was reaching for one of Evan's cups, she heard him speak again.
"Two juice, Mama, Ell-nore needs juice too. And fishes."
Kate chuckled softly as she grabbed another cup and a bowl from the cabinet. "And why does Elinore need Juice, huh?"
"Shh. Secret." Evan replied, a mischievous smile spreading across his face.
"I don't know if secretive boys and elephants can have juice and fishes."
"Mama!" Evan said, offense slipping into his voice.
Kate planted a kiss on her son's forehead as she put some goldfish into the bowl and poured juice into both cups and twisted on the red and blue lids. She settled Evan on the floor before handing him the cups, smiling as he clutched them close to his chest. But when he looked back up, the heartbreak in his eyes had Kate bending down to his level.
"What's wrong, Bud?"
"I can't carry fishes!"
"If I carry them for you can I see what you and Elinore are doing?"
Evan pondered for a moment before letting out a sigh and nodding. "But you hafta be quiet."
Kate nodded and gestured for her son to lead the way. She followed him up the stairs and to his room, where his elephant was waiting. Evan made his way over and carefully set the juice down before returning to Kate for the goldfish.
"You seed, Mama. You go now. We busy."
"What are you busy with?" She asked as she handed the goldfish over.
"We have a stake-out. Gotta catch bad guys." Evan replied before turning and walking back to the elephant. He put the bowl of crackers down and plunked down on his bottom and threw his arm over Elinore's shoulders.
As Kate made her way back downstairs, she heard her son's soft voice float down the hall.
"Did they come out yet, Ell-nore? We hafta put them in jail when they come out. They bad guys."
I would love to hear your thoughts!
