Yael Baron Comes Out As Pansexual
Yael twirled their hair nervously. They wished they had an old-fashioned phone with a cord, so they could twirl their fingers around it. They weren't sure whether they wanted Lola to pick up on the other end – but she did.
"Hi!", said Lola cheerfully. "What's going on?"
"Well, nothing really," said Yael. "There's just something I wanted to tell you. And it's not a bad thing! I just wanted to tell you that, um, I'm pansexual."
There was a distinct pause on the other end of the line.
"You…like pans?", asked Lola cautiously.
"No! It just means I'm attracted to people of any sex and gender identity. And this isn't me hitting on you, I just wanted you to know the truth about me, since we're such good friends."
"Okay," said Lola.
"So, we're good?"
"Well, what else?" asked Lola. "What am I going to do, stop being friends with you because you're pansexual? Come on, I know I'm not perfect but you have to give me more credit than that. Heck," she joked, "being friends with a pansexual genderqueer person will probably look good on my college application. And just think of all the queer scholarships you'll be able to apply for. Seriously though," and here she stopped joking, "you're my friend, and I'm glad you were able to share this with me."
"So am I," said Yael, and that was that.
