"Panic In The Narrows"

NOTE: I do not own Rachel, the little boy, Crane, Batman, or any other character.

"No one's going to hurt you."

Somehow, I didn't believe the words I said. The boy was trembling, silent tears streaming down his face. We were sitting on a street somewhere in the narrows, fog leaking onto the street, making the building in front of me barley visible. "Of course they are!" My head snapped up, and there in front of me, a shadowy figure in the night, Crane, astride a horse, cackled insanely. "Crane?" I called out. The mist was becoming so dense that I wasn't 100 sure that it was him. I wasn't sure of anything at the moment. "No! Scarecrow!" I knew at that moment, that I had to get the little boy and myself out of there. Crane might try and kill us. I scooped up the child, and ran blindly into the fog. I ran down the alley, praying that there would be someplace we could hide. I skidded to a halt in front of a brick wall. We were trapped. All I could hear was the screaming, the hooves of a horse, and the beating of my own heart. Oh god, I had to get out of there. "There is nothing to fear but fear itself!" The voice roared out of the mist, and a horse exploded through. I froze. Before I knew what had happened my taser was in my hand. Crane began to speak. I wasn't listening as I aimed at the mouth of the mask. I pulled the trigger.

Two wires shot out, surging with electricity, and embedded themselves into the stitching of the burlap mask. Crane screamed in agony and surprise, and fell backward off the horse. His feet became entangled with the stirrups, and the horse, spooked, darted off. I could hear Crane's screams echo around me, until the boy and I were alone. Or so I thought.
