Cypher
Vanitas can feel the tittering of Ven's heart.
He reaches, desperate, fingers brushing the smooth, chilling shaft of the x-blade as he falls further and further into the dark abyss that threatens to swallow him whole, and he can feel it.
He watches the twinkling of Ventus's eyes, like stars, shining languidly in the marine skyline of his irises, beneath the forest of messy, wheat-colored bangs and his overhanging, perfectly sculpted, furrowed brows. Vanitas swears that he can see Heaven through those eyes, the only glimpse of such a beautiful place that he's sure he'll ever catch. He feels that he is Lucifer, the tragic, fallen angel, and Ven is God, vengeful and proud, casting the darkness from his presence as if light can really survive without it.
He wonders if Ven realizes that he is so reminiscent of a kamikaze soldier; sacrificing himself for the death of an enemy, the literal example of "an eye for an eye".
He likes to believe that this is true. That maybe some darkness still lingers in Ven's heart. That maybe, just maybe, the lighter half of him can see that they are still two halves of one whole; that Ven may be stripped of darkness, but that his darkness has all but disappeared.
The x-blade slips from his sweaty grasp as all of the oxygen is pushed from his lungs. He is drowning in the darkness, in himself, and all he can do not to fade away is stare at Ventus, who is weak and clumsy, stupid and naïve…
Beautiful, even as the very last fragments of himself crumble and fall.
He wears a smile that is broken, and Vanitas wonders why humans smile when they can obviously feel the ominous, inevitable clutches of death licking at their ankles.
He also wonders how it feels to be happy.
He extends his arm once more, fingers spread, palm open and searching. The x-blade bursts into light, the tiny flecks and shards of it illuminating the endless darkness around them, if only for a moment, and reflecting golden off of Ventus's angelic face. Vanitas struggles, pulling himself forward, reaching for his lighter half and begging for reprieve.
'Please have me.'
His hearts screams, reaching, reaching.
'If I am destroyed, so are you!'
Ven's smile is still broken as he turns away, adverting those midnight eyes like the beautiful, forsaking God that Vanitas has always known he could be.
And Vanitas breathes one last breath, the feeling of Ventus's name lingering on his lips like the kiss of death, as he feels the grasping, clammy fingers of darkness take ahold of his slowly-beating heart.
Fin.
I finally got around to beating Birth By Sleep on Proud Mode (after beating it on Standard, I took a two week break), so I could finally see the final secret ending. Vanitas's face as he reaches for the x-blade always gets me. It makes me wonder what exactly was going through his head. (Besides, 'Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!' of course.)
My Creative Writing teacher chose one of my stories to use in his lesson last week. He said that it was a "great example of detail and saying something big without being blunt". Thank God it wasn't anything fanfiction-related (because obviously I don't turn my fanfiction work in), but it was still embarrassing!
Anywho, thank you for reading and please review and tell me what you thought!
