Faye watched the rippling water, breathing—in, out, in. The end of the docks felt so open when the ships departed. Were they going to come back? The thought no one left behind would think, or say, or dream. Zhou Yu knew it, Faye knew it, and the bastard that had left her behind, he knew it. But it was all smiles and pretend to everyone else. She wasn't the only girl left behind, Sun Shang Xiang, Da Qiao, Xiao Qiao, they were ordered to stay behind as well. Dangerous, they were told, and the boys would hear no more from them.

She knew her knuckles were white at her side, gripping to all she had of him, the bells. He left them, for her to have something, anything. There was no doubt in her mind that he had smiled when he climbed upon one of the boats, it was where he belonged after all. Her hand raised, her head lowered, eyes meeting the bells.

"You left me!" She shouted out to the water, chucking the bells out of anger as she did.

Fighting back the angry flow of tears, fighting back the urge to scream more, she marched back down the docks. Xiao Qiao skipped up the dock, they shared a brief glance, Xiao Qiao looked embarrassed, worried. Faye paused. Fumbling around for the bells that weren't there, she stumbled before swerving back around, the other girl nearly to the end of the dock. The haunting sound of his bells forced her forward, running. He'd come back for them, he'd be angry if he knew… He had to come back, if nothing else than for the bells.

She pushed off with her legs, Xiao Qiao shouting her name seconds before she smacked into the waves, being pulled under. She forced her eyes open, searching, scanning. The leather around the bells floated a yard before her. The water drowned the sound, she could feel him there as she reached, being thrashed around. There would be a storm soon, she offhandedly noticed. Her slender fingers stretched across the familiar fabric, yanking it to her, touching it to her heart.

"I'll be back," He laughed, at her, at her worry.

"Then why can't I go? Why can't any of us girls go?"

He paused in their walk, turning to face her. She stared him down, frowning. The argument was getting old, she could tell from the look on his face. Seconds floated between them, he sighed, she shifted, he messed with his hair, and she kicked the ground.

"Why don't you want me to go?" He asked.

"You could…" Her voice faltered, and he nodded.

"Yeah, but so could you," He turned, leaving the moment behind with his steps.

She gasped in the air as she broke the surface. Xiao Qiao with a look of shock and terror across her young face. Faye drifted back to the dock, pulling herself back up. Xiao Qiao knelt beside her, prodding her with questions and concern. Faye tilted her head to stare her in the face, laughing, coughing, and laughing more. Xiao Qiao looked confused, as Faye stood, shaking her head.

"He'll be back." For her.
