Escaping Your Shadow

*Akali's POV*

«-»

I felt that my balance was being interrupted by something quite severe, I had never encountered it this badly before. I lay there faced up in bed, staring at the blank ceiling as I had no hope of sleeping during this. Shen was sleeping next door, to ensure I was okay, as he could sense the interruption too.

Something just didn't feel right! I had the strongest hatred building up inside me, a revengeful hate, that left me unable to sleep regardless of my tiredness. I was tossing and turning now, as I had been losing my cool having had these feelings for what seemed like hours now. I knew Shen was sleeping next door, as he had been for the past few days. He was incredibly elegant, as I had never heard him snore, cough or even just turn in his bed. Most sounds could be heard through the thin walls separating us.

As I laid there, suddenly I felt the feeling start rising inside of me, it grew stronger and stronger feeling like each second it should reach its full potential but never did. I started to hear creaking sounds of footsteps, somebody was in the corridor. Through the thin walls I saw a dark silhouette moving across towards my door. It was a large, muscly looking man. As he moved closer, the feeling kept getting stronger. At this point I was breathing heavily from the hatred building up, and the anxiety of who this man was. I could feel my body getting sweaty, a bead of it running down my forehead feeling like a tear as it passed my cheeks. The man put his hand on the door and pushed it open. I was extremely scared to the point that my throat locked, I couldn't breathe. The silhouette called my name, "Akali."

At that I instantly recognised his wise voice, it was my fellow kinkou Shen, or the Eye of Twilight. "Akali, I sense the balance is getting worse, how are you?""The hatred is building up inside me, I can't sleep.""Hatred... This is strange, often there are interruptions in balance, but I have never heard of this."We both just looked at each other, pondering on the thought of what this means. After a long pause Shen shook his head out of concluding he could not work it out."Get some sleep for now Akali, we will visit our master in the morning."With that he left the room, firmly closing the door behind him. I attempted to get to sleep for the next hour or so, still with the hatred burning inside me.

It got to around 4am, and I was completely drowsy and exhausted at this point. Again I heard the footsteps in the corridor. This time I just laid on my side with my eyes half open, waiting for Shen to come into my room to check on me again. The door opened and nothing was said. The footsteps moved towards my bed and right up next to me. I muttered, "Shen?..." when suddenly I felt a sharp sting in the side of my neck. I let out a slight sigh as I was to tired to even react to the feeling. I suddenly felt my eyelids turn to stone as I struggled to keep them open. I took one last look up to see a silhouette I definitely did not recognise. The man wore a mask over his face meaning there was no way I could tell. With that my head fell back onto the pillow, my eyes closed, and I went into a deep sleep.
