Chrom woke up with a jolt. He looked to his side, only to find it cold and empty. He got up and walked to Lucina's room, but froze as soon as he heard the cry, "Auntie, where's Mama?"

Lissa shushed her with the somewhat choked-up words, "I'm sorry sweetie, she's gone now."

"Where did she go?"

"Somewhere...Somewhere far away."

"I wanna see her! Give me Mama back!" Lucina started wailing, and Chrom ran from the entrance.

With the whole day still ahead of him, Chrom decided to train to pass the time. On his way to the training ground, he heard someone calling his name.

"Father!" Morgan's voice rang out as he ran up to Chrom.

"What is it, Morgan?" Chrom asked

"Do you know where the second volume of that strategy book is? I searched everywhere in the library and it wasn't there."

"No, sorry. Why don't you ask your mo-" he froze.

"..Father, are you okay?" Morgan asked hesitantly.

"Yeah. Yeah, I'm okay. I'll keep an eye out for your book."

"If you say so…" Morgan said, not convinced.

And with that, Chrom continued to the training grounds. He stayed there until the sun started to set. When he heard the rumble of thunder, he made the movements to go back inside, but was stopped by the sight of a black book on a bench. Ah, this must be the book Morgan was looking for, he thought. As he reached for the book and touched it, memories rushed back to him.

"Someday this war will end. We'll emerge victorious and bring peace back to the world. And when that happens, we'll be free to follow our hearts."

"…Our hearts?"

"Yeah, 'cause I love you as well!"

His hand clutched the book tighter until his knuckles turned white.

"Oh Chrom, you didn't have to go through all this trouble. Just being with you has given me an endless supply of happy memories! I could never forget a single thing about you. Even if death were to tear us apart…"

With the book clutched to his chest, droplets of rain started to fall.

"Promise me Robin. Promise me you won't sacrifice yourself!"

"You're right, Chrom. I'm sorry. I promise."

Chrom chuckled bitterly. "You promise? Didn't we promise to stand by each other? Didn't you promise to be the wind at my back and the sword at my side? Hah…you liar."

With that said, he dropped to his knees under the pelting rain, and wept.
