At the beginning, Kirito is 14 while Hiru is 13. Hiru is what they call a "witch" meaning he has great skills when it concerns herbology. He can make potions from different plants that can have varying effects while also possessing a great affinity towards nature. Hiru character can perform "magic" by accessing a limited amount of the game's coding in order to manipulate the reality around him; this gift though can cause him to lose hp points, the stronger the coding, the more points he loses. Being a witch is a rare event, as they were beta testers who were randomly selected to become witches; as such, witches are hated, feared, and hunted more so than even beaters.
Kirito meets Hiru shortly after Asuna who introduces them as cousins though Hiru is said to be the one who convinced Asuna to play the game in the first place. Throughout the series, Kirito and Hiru become closer and, with Asuna's blessing, becomes married.
