Katie slouched across her bed engrossed in everything purple. She had her headphones on blasting rock music. She moved her leg awkwardly and hummed out of tune because she couldn't hear herself. She looked out the one window in her room. It made a creaking noise every time a gust of wind came up. A pair of shredded curtains flapped in and out. She turned back to staring at her ceiling. It was purple too. She closed her eyes and played with them by rolling them up and down, sideways and as far back as they could go until it hurt. She huffed and rolled over.
She jerked suddenly back around because she heard a strange noise. She sat up. Another pebble came flying in through the window. She smiled and leapt up toward the window tripping on whatever she left on the floor. She looked down four levels down. Matt was there. Her prince she thought. He held out his hands and knelt on one knee mouthing something that looked dramatic. Katie giggled. She held up on finger and then quickly turned it into a palm to blow him a kiss. He stood up and bowed.
Katie stumbled around her room clumsily. She was so excited. She couldn't stop smiling as she threw on some sweatpants and a baggy shirt. She didn't care how Matt saw her. He was her best friend. Bursting with excitement she quietly and slowly opened her poster covered door. She stepped out into the hallway and stood there for a whole five seconds. She listened for he Dad's quiet snore. She tiptoed a couple steps and glanced in her Dad's room. Sound asleep she collected. Quietly she slid down the stair case banister and landed flawlessly on the ground. She paused for a moment and went to the door. She threw on a light jacket and crept out the door. She waited for the click of the closing door. She was about to turn around when a hand clamped over her mouth gently. The figure turned her around and grinned. She melted.
"Matt!" she said excitedly and pecked him on the cheek.
"Goodnight milady" he said still smiling. Matt always said that on their midnight excursions and Katie loved it. Katie giggled and mocked a curtsy for a split second before grabbing his hand and running off into the night.
They ran for a minute and stopped bursting at the sides with laughter. They spun around like little kids playing ring around the rosy. Matt grabbed her waist and twirled her around. Katie let her head back and imagined she was flying.
"I missed you" she said.
"I missed you too Katie" he said in return. He whispered something else but Katie didn't hear him.
