The sounds of Iron town can be heard from here. It seems that they
have begun rebuilding. Hmm, I wonder if the woman has really changed. It
will take time for the wounds cause here to heal. The deaths of the forest
spirit, the destruction of the trees, even the rebuilding of the town.
"Ashitaka, what are you thinking about?"
"Huh? Oh, I'm sorry San, I was just, reminiscing."
"Hmm, Ashitaka, what will you do now? The curse has been lifted from your arm by the forest spirit. Isn't that what you came here for in the first place?"
"Yes, I did come here for that but I hadn't really thought about what to do next. Actually, I didn't think that I would survive the curse." "Ashitaka.?" but I wasn't able to finish my question. Just then we heard cries coming from the forest. They were coming toward us. Suddenly, a girl, only about 10 or so, burst from the trees. She had dark hair, and wore a dirty kimono. Followed by my brother, close in pursuit. Then the girl stumbled and fell. I didn't stop my brother because I knew that this was the way things were.
"Kisho, stop! I beg of you!" All of a sudden Ashitaka was in front of the wolf. "Kaya, is it really you?" Looking over the girl, he sees it is the young girl that had been like a sister to him in his village. He was shocked to see the condition of her kimono. What used to be a pretty yet functional piece of clothing was now nothing more than rags.
"Anisama? Oh Anisama!(older brother)" the girl cried and began to sob into his shirt. Ashitaka smoothed the girl's hair and picked her up. Her tears were lessening.
"San? Is it ok to take her to your cave to rest?"
"Hmm, yes." To my brother I said, "I'm sorry Kisho, I guess you'll have to find something else for dinner." Then we , I and Ashitaka who still held the girl in his arms, climbed thru the forest to the cave where my brothers and I live. We got to the cave and Ashitaka laid the girl, who had fallen asleep in his arms, down on the bed of leaves and moss. When he turned toward me I motioned him to follow me outside. "So Ashitaka, who is this girl?"
"It's Kaya. A girl from the Emishi village where I used to live." I knew little about the village itself, only that he had been exiled because of his encounter with the boar that had become a demon that ended up cursing his arm. "I hadn't thought I'd ever see anyone, much less her, again. It's a long way from the village, I wonder why she's here." He said to me, glancing back into the cave.
"Well, I guess we'll find out when she wakes up. It's clear the child has been through a lot. Kaya? Is that her name? I looked over at the man who had become so dear to me. The only human who I have ever cared about. I smiled as I looked at him, his dark, chin length hair, and large eyes they were so serious. He clearly thought that this was something serious. But, if they were that close that she would call him an older brother, perhaps it was nothing more than the girl missing him. Probably not.
