She is alone there, her tears like shattering diamonds, and barely breathing. She is reaching blindly forward, reaching out for him. Her hands meet the fabric of his cotton shirt and she tries to open her eyes to see him but she cannot. She can only lie there, alone. Cold. He is not moving.
She can see him in her mind if she concentrates. He is young, not yet turned five but he acts as though he has lived through many ages. He is her little brother, but they look nothing alike. She looks like her father, has his dark looks and sarcastic personality, but he looks like her mother. He had light blonde hair and aqua eyes and he was frail like her mother too. How could they do this to him?
"Logan…" she whispers to him, trying to muster the strength to pull him towards her. She can't do it. She hears a sinister chuckle and tries to open her eyes again but it is in vain and they know it.
"Miss McKinnon, it is no use. We gave you the chance leave but you threw it away by trying to rescue this." Says the man, referring to her brother. She thinks the man's name might be Dolohov. It doesn't matter. He is kicking her hard in the stomach and she can't even cry out because it takes too much energy.
"The halfbreed will be disappointed no doubt," says a second sneering voice, she thinks it might be Travers, "In fact I would bet money on how long it takes before he ends his miserable existence." Her heart speeds up and she feels faint. Remus.
"N-no…" she stumbles, finally opening her eyes a sliver. She sees the man who might be Dolohov move closer to her until he on his knees and looking into her eyes. He grins. "No?"
"I need to… see him." She says, closing her eyes again. "Please…" she chokes out, tasting blood in her mouth. She imagines him smirking.
"Such a tragedy," Dolohov breathes, his breath reeking of something bitter, "That no one here is alive to hear your last scream."
And she does scream. She screams in such a way that she is surprised no one hears her. It is the last thing that Marlene hears in this world, other than the pounding beat of her heart ringing in her ears, which only lasts for a short moment before everything goes silent and dark and she hears herself begging to be killed.
And they, being merciful, comply.
