"I beg your pardon?"
Normally, Unohana was unflappable. But then, Zaraki Kenpachi didn't normally unceremoniously barge into her office with the sort of request he was putting to her now.
Outside, Unohana could hear Isane protesting and slapping the palm of her hand on the door. "I'll be out in a minute, Isane," Unohana called to her concerned lieutenant to quiet and reassure her, getting up from her desk. Sure enough, the pounding on the door ceased.
Kenpachi had muscled his way past every single Fourth division member that had tried to bar him from Unohana-taicho's office, telling him that she was busy with paperwork. Unohana's lips tightened ever so slightly; she disliked it when any Shinigami, especially members of the Eleventh division, got the impression in their head that the Fourth division were Shinigami who could be pushed around.
In the meantime, Kenpachi's habitual frown deepened as he looked down at the woman who was well over a foot shorter than. "You're not deaf, Unohana. Do you accept or not?"
Vivid blue eyes narrowed ever so faintly as Unohana made it a note to study the other captain's scarred face. "Perhaps you could reiterate your request, Zaraki-taicho."
The big man snorted before launching into his hastily spoken, scowling request. "Look, I want you to sign this paper," he stated, holding said paper out to her, "that's all."
Unohana smiled pleasantly; never, though Kenpachi was a bit unsubtle to realize it, a good sign. "If you are to be believed, Zaraki-taicho, then that is most certainly not all."
"Ah, hell, Unohana. Why shouldn't it be you? Yachiru's always around here anyway, and the only other people who I trust enough to do it right is a guy who's probably gonna drop dead any day now, my two wacko officers and a girl who's always in the cup!"
Her smile grew only more pleasant. "Zaraki-taicho, I highly doubt that you will be killed any time soon. But if it will make you feel better, then—" she took the paper from Kenpachi, laid it down on her desk and signed it, and then gave it back to him "—of course I will agree to this. I am not without a heart, Zaraki-taicho."
Said captain rolled his one visible eye. "Sometimes I wonder. Thanks, Unohana." He left the way he came.
After Kenpachi was gone, Isane, still gaping slightly, poked her silver-haired head inside. "Unohana-taicho, what did Zaraki-taicho want that was so urgent?"
Unohana smiled warmly at her earnest lieutenant. "Nothing to be concerned about, Isane. Just a family matter."
