Olivia White had always grown up without the feeling of love. She'd promised to herself when she was young that she wouldn't sing of love, because simply it didn't exist. If love had existed both of her parents wouldn't have been taken from her. She remained this promise until she saw him. HIM.
Maybe there was an exception to this promise of hers? Only one.
These words she thought in her head made her think of lyrics. Lyrics leading to a melody. Finally the lyrics and melody created the first verse of a song in her mind. She began to write it down in her song book one that she had kept since she was 5. The memories flashed before her as she wrote her new song.
When I was younger
I saw my daddy cry
And curse at the wind
He broke his own heart
And I watched
As he tried to reassemble it
Her Father had blamed her Mother's death on himself. Olivia had watched as he cried, cursed, and struggled two nights after she died. She remembered before her Mother died she told Olivia she could never forget her Livvy bug or her husband. Soon it all just fell apart. Olivia kept writing.
And my momma swore that
She would never let herself forget
And that was the day that I promised
I'd never sing of love
If it does not exist
Olivia took a deep breath and closed her eyes. His strawberry hair, his green eyes, his voice that could be so gentle yet so strong. He was the only exception. He was her only exception. She continued writing on her page.
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
She knew that love never lasted. There was always a divorce, or some sort of separation between two who once thought they were in love. She was always content with loneliness. Just her and her Gram, and her new kitten he had given her. That's all she needed.
She knew though soon her Gram would be gone and then she would be completely alone, she just had to keep a straight face. This brought more lyrics in mind.
Maybe I know, somewhere
Deep in my soul
That love never lasts
And we've got to find other ways
To make it alone
Or keep a straight face
And I've always lived like this
Keeping a comfortable, distance
And up until now
I had sworn to myself that I'm content
With loneliness
Because none of it was ever worth the risk
But he was worth the risk. He was the only one who understood her completely. The only one who had always been there for her through every up and down. Ever since 1st grade.
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
She was too smart for the tricks and troubles of love. She was the only one with her head out of the clouds. With a grip on what is real and what isn't. She just needed proof he was real.
I've got a tight grip on reality, but I can't
Let go of what's in front of me here
I know you're leaving in the morning, when you wake up
Leave me with some kind of proof it's not a dream
Ooh Ooh...
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
You are the only exception
Right after she finished writing the last chorus she heard a knock on the door.
"I've got it Gram!" She yelled to her Grandmother who was sewing. She ran to the door and opened it.
She saw no other than the boy the song she had just written was about. Wendall Gifford.
