Love in the Eyes of the Beholder
Ainsley looked over at CJ and Danny. They were discussing something about the press conference that CJ had held earlier that evening, but even she could see there was something more under their words. She didn't know if it was affection or not, but it certainly had the potential to be. If they would stop being so pig-headed that is.
She turned to face Josh and Sam who were standing beside her and also observing CJ and Danny.
"For such smart people, they are being rather stupid," Ainsley said, gesturing at the two across the hall.
Sam didn't need Ainsley to explain what she meant by that; it was obvious. He didn't bother responding to Ainsley's words. Instead he just moved his eyes from CJ and Danny to land on Josh for a moment before flicking over to a passing Donna, but it seemed that Josh missed this pointed look.
"How long do you think it will take before they wise up?" Josh asked and his eyes briefly left the chatting duo to cast a significant glance between Sam and Ainsley. Apparently he too had picked up on CJ and Danny's obvious attraction.
"At their rate, I'd say when they're both a hundred," Sam replied. Both he and Ainsley appeared to have missed the look from Josh.
"I don't know, they might have a good reason for staying apart. After all, he's a reporter and she's the press secretary. It could be a conflict of interest," Ainsley said sensibly.
"But if they really liked each other, then their jobs wouldn't matter, right?" Sam countered, his eyes again flashing towards Josh.
"Yeah," Josh said. "Nothing should matter except how you feel about each other." This time his gaze rested on Ainsley for a moment before returning to the neutral position of staring blankly back at CJ and Danny.
"I never took you to be a romantic Josh. Nor you either Sam," Ainsley said, looking between the two of them.
Both of them flashed indignant looks at her, all thoughts of CJ and Danny temporarily on hold, before responding in perfect unison, "Are you comparing me to him?" They looked at each other again for a moment before turning back to face Ainsley.
"At least we're not as bad as CJ and Danny. We're not that out of it. Well, at least I'm not." Josh said.
Sam sent a brief scowl his way, but let the comment lie for the moment.
"Oh yes, Josh, you're certainly not as bad as CJ and Danny," Ainsley said. Josh didn't miss the heavy sarcasm in her voice, but, like Sam, chose to ignore the jab. He left without another word.
Deciding to follow him, Sam said to Ainsley, "I'll meet you for lunch to go over the Rockman memo."
"Fine," Ainsley said as both turned to walk away.
None of them noticed that CJ and Danny had long ago stopped their discussion and had been observing the three of them with as much interest as had previously been focused upon themselves.
"How long do you think it will take for those three to finally confess their feelings?" CJ asked conversationally.
"I don't think they ever will. Those three wouldn't recognize true love if it led a parade of twenty trombones," Danny said.
CJ nodded and the pair split apart with a farewell nod.
A/N: I hope this wasn't too confusing. I just meant it to be a funny short and I hope it came across as that. Thanks to Comic Nerd for attempting to beta this and I'm just going to give an advanced thanks to Kerichi because I know she will find something for me to change. Well Kerichi, send me your worst! I've got my chin pads and boxing gloves ready and waiting on your command.
