"I tell you, it's the sponges!" Jack said seriously.

"It's not the sponges!" Vala argued, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning back in her chair. She eyed her blonde friend sitting next to her, eyes glued to the magazine on her lap.

"No?" Jack asked. "Then what is it?"

"The sea men," Vala said as though the answer should have been obvious.

"The sea men?" Jack raised his eyebrows and bit back a laugh.

"Yes," Vala nodded. "The men who live in the sea. Like King Triton."

"Mermen," Jack corrected her.

"Sea men!" Vala shot back, causing Cameron Mitchell to burst out laughing.

The group of six friends sat in Jack's living room of his Washington brownstone. They all had varying lengths of leave and had decided to make a trip to Washington to catch up.

Teal'c sat in the biggest armchair closest to the fire. Daniel sat on the chair closest to Jack's small bookcase, scanning the titles. Vala sat on the left hand side of the couch. Cam sat on the floor by Vala's feet. Jack sat on the right hand side of the couch with Sam pulled close to him, her legs draped over his lap and over the arm of the couch.

"What?" Vala asked, softly hitting Cam across the head with her hand.

"Think about it!" he laughed out. "Sea men?"

"Oh!" she laughed at herself. Jack buried his head Sam's shoulder as he laughed.

"Sponges," Jack muttered into his wife's neck.

"What?" Sam asked, finally drawing her eyes away from the magazine.

"Sponges," he repeated.

"What about them?" she asked, frowning.

"They control the tides," he said straight faced.

"It's the moon," she said as she went back to her magazine.

"The moon!" Jack laughed. "It's obviously the sponges."

"Sea men, Mermen, whatever!" Vala said, trying to hold back the laughter.

"You're both wrong," Daniel said as he turned to face them.

"Yeah? What's your theory?" Jack asked.

"Plugs."

"Plugs?" Cam laughed.

"Yeah. The Earth is like an hour glass. Take the plug out of the Northern hemisphere and it goes to the bottom. Take the plug out of the Southern hemisphere and it goes to the top. Tide goes in and out," he nodded and smiled smugly.

"I still know it's the sponges. Sponges hold water. The sponges breathe in and the tide goes out. The sponges breathe out and the tide comes in. You're all wrong. I'm right. The moon…" he shook his head and kissed his wife's forehead. "I always knew you were special."

Cam held his ribs as he laughed. He could feel the tears prick his eyes as he tried to compose himself. He glanced at Teal'c. He had a small smile on his face as he looked around at his friends. Teal'c knew his friends were a strange species but knew he couldn't ask for better friends than the five sitting in front of him.
