B'Elanna walked slowly into the room, the doors sliding obediently to let her advance. She had a lot of things on her mind that day, but her heart were weighing heavy with them.

She took a seat but sat stiffly upright, not allowing her sleep deprived body to relax. Tom walked in from their bedroom, stretching a little after his nap. His face broke into a surprised smile when he saw her, but her face broke into a painful expression as she attempted to control her unstable emotions.

"B'Elanna? Has something happened?"

"Please don't talk now Tom. Come sit with me - please."

He conformed to her wishes and sat close beside her, and took her shaky hands in his strong ones. She let her head fall against his comforting shoulders and one hand stroked the back of hair affectionately. They just sat like this for a long time before his whispered "I love you B'Elanna Torres."

"Tom I have something I need to say. Something I never thought I would have to say, not to you. Please don't interrupt me, because this is very difficult."

He nodded empathically.

"I will never be the person I thought I was destined to be. And I have you to thank for that. I thought I'd always be an angry, revengeful, bitter person. When I pushed everyone away, you were still close by. You made me laugh, Tom - you make me happy. You've never understood me and yet you never give up trying, and somehow that's just as touching. I can't imagine what life would have been like on this ship if it weren't for you. But I don't have to imagine, because you've always been there for me. When we're together you make me feel as though we are the only two people in the world. I know I celebrated my thirtieth birthday last week, but I still feel so young - like I'm six years old. My life began when I met you - and the years before then just seem a distant memory."

"I guess that's what I wanted to say", she almost whispered, pulling out of the hug and staring deep into his eyes. "My life is richer because I've known you, Tom. Thank you for being my friend. I will always love you."

She kissed him passionately, but gently, as she felt the unusual sensation of tears spilling over her eyelids and slipping down her face. She stood slowly. "Goodbye Tom Paris."

As she approached the doors they hissed softly open and as she passed through them she called sorrowfully "Computer, end program."
And everything inside including the bewildered simulation of Tom Paris disappeared revealing a stark, empty canvas that paralleled B'Elanna's shattered heart. She had needed to see his face one more time - to feel his arms around her. Though she hated to admit it, Harry had been right. In order to build her new life, she had needed to say goodbye to the foundation of her old one.
