I'm Already There by Lonestar
Warning: What you are about to read might invoke tears. The entire story, though kinda happy, will be sad.
Not used to making River be upset, usually I make the Doctor all sad and depressed. But I thought I'd try my hand at River this time. Tell me what you think!
The phone rang in River's living room and she hurried to answer it, clutching it with both hands to her ear.
"Hello?" Her voice almost cracked just with one word.
"Hey." The man on the other end of the phone said, and she could tell he was feigning a happy tone. But even if he was faking, she let out the deep breath she'd taken only a few moments before, and relief filled her voice.
"Doctor…" She said, knowing nothing else she could say.
"I only have a few minutes…"
"Where are you?" She asked quickly, and heard a deep chuckle come from the other line.
"River, you know if I tell you that it'll just make you worry more…"
"But not telling me…"
"How are you doing? Have you gotten the promotion you deserve so much? Do Amy and Rory visit often?" He cut her off, and he heard her give a small, cough like laugh.
"I'm as fine as I can be. No, I haven't gotten a promotion… and the Williams' come by every so often… mainly when they can tell something's gone wrong and want to distract me." She answered, giving up on their small argument.
"Good." He breathed, and she heard the smile in his voice.
"Doctor… are you going to be coming home?" Her voice really did crack this time, and she felt the first tear leave her eye. She heard his breath catch, but he didn't answer.
"River…"
"Doctor! Will you or won't you?" She shouted at him.
"Hear me out… River, I'm already with you. In mind, heart and soul… and within the next few days, I shall physically be with you…" He said calmly. Her lower lip trembled, but she smiled and nodded, forgetting he wasn't able to see the movement of her head.
"Thank you." Her voice came out as a whisper, and she wiped her eyes with the back of her coat sleeve.
"No… Thank you."
