"Moments- the ones that come and go, are the ones that define us. The ones that don't, such as dying or going blind are only a part of our exterior.
It's when we overcome something that we gain a perspective, and as doctors, we need to overcome. Because if we don't- We aren't doctors any more."
"You're not going back." Meredith studied the patterns on the ceiling tiles. She put her cheek to the carpet beneath her, and looked at Christina lying reversed beside her.
"I'm not going back." Cristina answered, still with her eyes on the ceiling.
There was a moment of absolute silence. Meredith wasn't even sure Cristina was still breathing, but she figured she would have let her know first before deciding not to breathe any more.
The shielding silence was cut off by a distant sound. A car door being slammed shut. Seconds later there was the sound of keys rattling right outside the front door.
The door opened and Derek entered the house. He immediately spotted his wife and her.. No, he didn't even want to go there. He hung his jacket up and walked right past the two women on the floor and into the kitchen.
"Had a nice day?" Meredith called from the living room floor. Derek peeked out the kitchen.
"Yes, the atrial myxoma patient with atrial septal defect turned critical and we had to go into surgery. Guess who scrubbed in?"
Meredith sat up with big eyes. "Not April?"
"She did a good job getting the tumor out."
"But that was supposed to have been MY surgery!"
"But you weren't there." Derek replied in an almost too casual tone.
The sound of laughter had Meredith turn to Cristina. She was still lying on the carpet looking up at the ceiling. "This is just like that Spanish soap opera."
Meredith got up and rushed to Derek in the kitchen.
"So how did it go?" she asked, pretending to study the headlines of today's newspaper.
"It went fine. After the tumor was removed the blood vessels decompressed and he turned stable."
"No, I meant with the Chief."
Derek stopped and turned to Meredith. She in turn put the newspaper back down on the table.
"There was nothing he could do about it." Derek answered. "Cristina wants to quit and he can't hold on to those papers forever."
"No, but he has to! Cristina.." Meredith halted herself, then resumed speaking in a lower voice.
"Christina can't quit, this job is WHO she is. She can't quit!"
"She already has. The Chief mailed the forms this afternoon. As of today, Yang is no longer a doctor."
The sound of the front door opening and closing had the two turn towards the living room.
"Cristina!" Meredith called out as she ran after her.
I hope you like the first part. This is kind of meant to be the "into" and nothing more, that's why it's so short. I just wanna see if there's any interest, and if there is, I'll be updating :)
Thanks for reading!
