Chapter 1

Lucina

They were all around me, shambling haphazardly towards me from all directions. Their sinister glowing red eyes all pointed directly at me, in an unwavering stare of lethal intent. I knew that I couldn't defend myself much longer. I was already tiring, and I would soon be overrun. Stumbling up the grand staircase, I desperately tried to think of a way out of this, but I saw none. I had to use my last resort. I released the magic I held tight within me, I felt it rush through me, flowing outward from the center of my being. I willed it onward, urging it into the farthest reaches of my body. Once it had filled me I felt it trying to push outwards, to expand beyond my mortal form, becoming an extension of my immortal spirit. All I had to do was reach the altar, then I'd be safe, but I was only halfway up and the Risen were closing in fast, narrowing the distance rapidly with their unnaturally fast shuffle. I let the magic do as it wished, and I allowed it to spread beyond me into the Falchion. The magic burst forth from my fingertips, filling the sword with the fury borne of the tragedies I had been a witness too. A faint blue light began to shine at the center of the crossguard of the Falchion, slowly filling the space. I cut down several more of my attackers as I climbed higher and higher up the marble steps, knowing I had only to hold out until the magic was ready. Once the space had been filled, the blue light began to climbed up the groove in the center of the sword. I had reached the altar atop the temple. The magic was finally ready to be used. I took one last swing at one of the undead assaulting me, then held my sword vertically, pointed directly at the sky. The light blue energy of the magic erupted from the end of the Falchion, a beacon of hope amidst a sea of darkness. The raw energy of the magic bursting forth from the Falchion tore most of the Risen to shreds, spattering blood and guts across the stairs of the temple. Up in the sky, the blue began to spread out into an arcane circle, one that I had never seen before, despite my copious studies. There was a thin blue line at the center of the circle. The runes on the outside of the arcane circle began to glow a warm golden hue. Then, when the runes had reached their brightest, the line in the middle began to widen, creating a ghostly blue circle with a single black oval in its center: A Cosmic Eye. Once the magic had stopped coursing from it, I brought my Falchion down, unintentionally cleaving open one of the few Risen that had not been repulsed by the opening of the Cosmic Eye. Then, remembering what I had learned from my study of the Book of Awakening, I jumped. Instead of falling back down, I continued floating up. It was as if gravity had ceased to function. I floated up towards the eye. Then, I sank into it. Once my head had passed through, I blacked out.
