Child at Heart:

Tinkering with my machines always gives me a chance to relax, usually after a long adventure with Sonic. It is not long till I am back up again, trying to help him all I can.

Hopefully, this new Mega Drive will enhance my new Saturn 2000.

I sigh as I remember no one knows what it is like to be a childhood genius.

A genius that constantly feels like he needs to prove himself to the world.

That is why I originally learned to keep up with Sonic and help him out.

I could analyze him easily enough: cocky, brash and will need help down the line.

I guess my intelligence could pick that much up about his character.

I fit in the Mega Drive into the new Bi-Plane and look down at the last edition to the bi-plane: a Dream Caster, to increase my thruster power by five point three percent faster.

My thoughts begin to wander again, but I can't stop myself.

I decided to help Sonic out because I had nowhere else to turn back to. Being alone as a child with no friends and no family to turn to only complicate matters. Sonic has always been like a big brother to me since I met him, always helping me out of tight spots.

But I ain't afraid to say I help out of tight spots as well.

But sometimes, I tire of being a sidekick. I want to be a hero every once in a while, prove myself, and step up a level … whatever you want to call it.

I slip the Dream Caster into an empty slot and flick a few switches up.

It works!

"Yipee!" I yell joyfully.

I look around, hesitantly, to see if anyone is watching. I know I am a child, but sometimes I feel the need to act adult.

I shrug.

Oh well.

When I jump in the plane, I remember why I sometimes prefer this to flying with my two tails. At the end, I feel exhausted, whereas with a plane, as long as there is fuel, it can keep going.

I pull back the controls and launch it into the sky.

Yahoo!

I look down to see the Mystic Ruins and my workshop being left far below.

I feel so young and alive, away from the pressure that can be tough.

I do a few loop-de-loops in the plane to test out whether the Mega Drive and Dream Caster works.

Yep, it is working. Although I might need to add two more Dream Casters to make the thrusters go ten point six percent faster …

There I go again.

Something seems to crash into my face. What's this in my face? A pre-recorded message on a piece of paper by Eggman? … Something about three days?

Well, I guess this could be my personal plane I use in my spare time, so, better get the Cyclone out, go find Knuckles, then Sonic … wherever he could be …

Oh well, it was good while it lasted. Back to adventuring again …

AUTHOR'S NOTES: Well, after a request from someone over on a Tails' forum to do more of these character one-shots, I decided to give a stab at everyone's favourite Two Tailed fox. I thought of what possible problems he could have and decided to explore the problem of the childhood genius.

I wasn't sure about the ending, but with Tails just sitting down, he is already back on his feet seems like an interesting idea to me. I used it, but since I am rarely satisfied with my work, I hope you guys think I did alright.

Feedback as always is appreciated.
